Near the core of the planet.
Dig down. You will eventually find ore bits that glow orange. Those are core fragments. Do not confuse core fragments with lava that conveniently glows the exact same color.

Lava will, more or less, instantly kill you. Core fragments will not.

What Omnipresent said, core fragment's are near the core of every planet, they pose no danger so they are fine to mine, but be weary of the lava that is usually present around those depths.

I got around 20 fragments from going halfway around the planet. Somewhere there is a mine that holds about 20 of them. I'm not sure if only I got lucky, or that it was intentional.

Usually, looting all the storages in the mine and killing the miniboss (the big poptop) will get you over 20 core fragments. If that isn't enough or you just want more, core fragments are near a planet's core, funnily enough.
You have to dig pretty deep to get there, and pass several mini-biomes on the way.
Stock up on torches, wooden platforms, salves and food (if you play on survival) before going there. Also, the ore clusters tend to get bigger the deeper you dig, so core fragments isn't your only reason to go.

how do we upgrade our lazer miner thing, and also can we make spawn points somehow it would suck to die and then have to go allll the way down to hell again.

you can use upgrade modules to upgrade your mining laser's intensity (=mining speed) and area of effect. You might also find pickaxes in containers, they don't last long but can speed up your mining significantly.
For spawn points, you can craft flags and put them down wherever you want (outside mission dungeons), that way you can teleport directly to those points. They are reusable, too (if you remember picking them up again after you are done strip-mining the planet)

if you are on the first planet then there should be a mine where you find the core fragments after killing the mother poptop

is there any wy to get a map!!!? im a little drunk and was being an idiot and forgot to set my flag and lost maybe 3 hours of mining and good stuff!!! FML i dont remember where i was it was so far down and i lost all my 30 plus cores to repair my ship :steamsad:

You don't necessarily get much of a means of navigational assistance until later on. It would also be worth noting that you should not delve too deep. If you make it down where there are core fragments and meet an unusually large chasm farther down then there is core magma and the bottom of the screen below.

sorry, there is no map. The only things I would advise is: mark your way with torches (bring plenty) and use wooden platforms (bring even more) so you can climb up again.

It might also be a good idea to remove torches in dead ends so you don't confuse yourself unnecessarily. And 20 core fragments is nothing once you get closer to the core. You can get all you need, there, the only limit is how long you can keep that mouse button pressed because it's a PITA to chew through the rocks near the core.

The painting tool is also very useful and if you lucky, you can get all modules for it in the mine on your first planet. Just always mark my path with green color, and dead ends with red, helps me and my friends a lot : D
