Why does soda hurt my crew members?

I thought it would be nice for moral to bring one of the many soda machines I had come across to my ship for the crew to use. They seem to enjoy using it too, and often go to the machine to get a drink. Except...

Whenever they use the machine they take damage. Sometimes it's even elemental, DoT type damage, like they drank some lava or poison. What's going on exactly that this is happening? It hasn't killed anyone (yet) but I'd like to know of something like 'certain races can't handle soda' is going on or what.

I think your crew members are simply clumsy - clumsy NPCs are really bad at using things, and sometimes their faltering sets them on fire or causes explosions. It's never lethal, though, and your stuff is still perfectly usable no matter how many explosions occur.

Wow. I could imagine a lot of things happening, but... getting set on fire from drinking soda? xD

How do I go about improving the competency of my crew? Any suggestions?

You'll have to take some time to observe your crew and see which ones are the clumsy ones. You may want to consult http://starbounder.org/Clumsy so that you can spot them faster.

Once you find them, you will have to fire them and find replacements (there's no way to make a clumsy NPC stop being clumsy without the use of console commands). Make sure to check that the replacements aren't also clumsy before you hire them.
