Steam or GOG version?
I've heard rumors that Steam version requires patches in order to function properly in newer Windows, whereas GOG version is patched up and ready to run off the bat?

Both versions require patches, because both are outdated... The version at GOG only stinks less (is slightly newer). So... the probability that the GOG version is going to run without problems is indeed higher. That however shouldn't stop you from installing TFix on it, anyway.

Hmm unless GoG updated its version again since last time I downloaded it from them, they should be the same.
Either way, both are ready to run on recent systems, and both can be easily upgraded using TFix.

Look I love GOG In fact got GOG version of systemshock 2 which is actually really better than the steam version since its modable to add texture packs & other elements. Now I own Thief gold & Thief2 CD version I bought it again from steam the reason is I already owned Thief I already know that I can't run my Retail version on a modern PC without TFIX. Before TFIX wow I had to loan a win95 laptop from my close friend to play the game. Anyways what I meant by all this doesn't matter if you get steam or GOG as long as you TFIX your Gold Thief GOLD :P XD.

What are you talking about? The steam version of System Shock 2 runs all mods fine. Some mods had the possibility of causing problems at release. Even then 95% of all mods and texture packs worked without an issue. But they released like three patches within a week afterwards, even added a launcher for fan missions. Works great now.

The GoG versions of Thief have now been updated to NewDark 1.21 so I recommend to get these from there :-)

Sorry to do a slight necro, but I just wanted to say that this thread was very helpful to me as I was going to ask the same question.

Well, I guess I could add another question; in general, are the GOG versions of older games usually more compatible with newer systems and Windows 7 than is Steam? Or is that not really a valid generalization?

Idk...

The team at GOG rarely is responsible for updating the game per say. Most of the time what they do is pack an old game with emulators, wrappers and changes to compatibility in system. And while releases of Dos games on Steam usually come with DosBox, I'm surprise in some incidents like Thief, where they don't come with additional fixes. Let's remind however, it's up to publisher to patch the games. It should be also in publishers interest to offer more or less equal deal on all platforms of digital distribution... and recently - that's what we've been getting on Steam comparing to GOG.

When it comes to Thief, Square Enix doesn't seem to care about Steam version of Thief any more. Maybe the fact that NuThief is so far from original has something to do with it.:tank:

the current Thief games on GOG are both updated with the NewDark engine, so if you are completely, absolutely unable to use all-in-one patchers (recommended for any version, even the current GOG one), you are probably better off getting the games from GOG.

I actually just bought these 2 games a few days ago while summer sale was going on.

I'm going to download the New Dark patch, I believe that's all the necessary work in order to play them.

Just to ask - six years after this thread began - has the Steam version of Thief yet been updated to run out-of-the-box on modern computers, with this "New Dark" whatever it is?

If not, why not, and should Square Enix or whoever owns the rights be petitioned?

Because the current version on GOG works out-of-the-box even on Windows 10.

Steam version works perfectly but after installing it on Windows 10, I realised that the cinematics do not work (even with the Tfix tweak, i.e registering LGVID.AX using regsvr32.exe). But I found that running thief.exe in compatibility mode (Win Xp, SP3) solves the problem.

they do (after patching up), you just need to restart your computer. no need to register the codec or force compatibility modes.
