You Need TFix!
Anyone ranting on how broken/fugly the game is, you NEED to download and install TFix for a stable, bearable experience. Thief Gold is so old that it does not run properly on modern PCs. When I tried to play it vanilla (without modding/patching) the game progressed at least 500% faster than normal. The controls felt absolutely awful beacuse of this, especially in the climbing section of the tutorial, and I would have thought it was a problem with the game design itself had I not read the mission stats: the timer read 1 hour and 3 minutes after I had spent roughly 10 min in the tutorial. Thankfully, I found the Thief Gold Setup and Modding Guide here on Steam, followed the instructions, and ta-da! It's a GAME! Full 1080p, great sound, smooth gameplay! You can even install mods for high-res textures and detailed models if you wish! Epic win!!!

EDIT: A link to Saleck's guide, look for the instructions here http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=113158282

It's really a shame that the Steam version isn't patched to begin with. And praise the Builder for all the fans this game has, or no one would have made the patches and I would not be able to experience Thief!

whoever is managing the steam builds of Thief and Thief2 is free to patch them up with NewDark (the new version of the Dark Engine that TFix applies), the release notes explicitly state that the engine update can be used by anyone for any purpose. in case something is not clear, they can always ask the Thief community for help.

The problem is that the patched version on the new engine isn't *technically* Thief Gold anymore, in an official sense. The conflict wouldn't be with the makers of TFix, but rather with whoever owns the rights to Thief Gold. I seriously doubt they would actually have a problem with a patch that fixes their game, but it's probably still kind of a legal obstacle.

well, GOG managed to sort it out (now using NewDark for both for TG and T2), so it's not all that difficult, I'd imagine.

TFix is absolutely essential. I would not even consider it a mod. I did not install "T2 skies", better textures or any of those, because I wanted to play the game "as vanilla as possible".

I've never considered it a mod, as that would suggest changes to mechanics and gameplay - and TFix only fixes stuff, so it's more of a patch really. even after applying it, the game should still look like, play like, and feel like good old Thief. minus all the broken and ugly.

and maybe you should reconsider about the skies - they are nice, and fit in really well.

as I have been given a free TG key, I could dissect the steam build, and fix that annoying problem with some essential files not being overwritten properly which in turn broke the options menus (and other things). TFix should be now fully steam compatible - even patching with steam running in the background should pose no problem.

The HD Mod and TFix is impressive. I've been playing this on my modern system along with 3D Vision. My favorite game is back with high resolution 1920x1080, updated textures and widescreen support in 3D. Phenomenal game, reminds me why I always consider Thief 1/2 my favorite game of all time. 3D vision knocks it up tenfold.....in case anyone cares, here is the link to accomplish this

Been having a blast taffing around, knocking out guards and npc's never gets old.....lol

I can verify, TFix makes it run buttery smooth. Had issues with ddfix and whatnot, but TFix took care of all of it.

When I try to run the TFix installer I get "error launching installer" error. I've installed C+ and DX9 libraries. Wheres the problem?
ps47.3dfx Mar 16, 2014 @ 11:54am
the installer itself has no prerequisites, so if it refuses to run, it's probably an incomplete download. redownload and try again.

I download the patch, and everything worked fine apart from 2 things. I can't use shift+w to sprint, it has to be just shift, and the major one is my character now walks at about 1/4 of the orginal speed and when I use toggle speed, he just slows even more. So I am left with either moving a what is usually crounching + toggle speed, speed or sprinting. Anyone had the game issue? This happened on my PC and my Dad's laptop. The game itself runs smooth, it's just strange that the walking speed has changed.

A reinstall fixed it, no idea what happened

this is one of those "not really a bug, more of a feature" things - basically, the modified engine handles the controls in a slightly different way than the old one. rebinding, or loading one of the included bind sets (options/controls/customize controls/load) should solve this.
