Can't get key to Victor's office?

So, I've gotten to the part where Victor's daughter forged the dean's signature, presumably on a form needed to get the key. However, I don't know what to do next, there's no option to talk to the administrative worker in the office next door anymore

Mouse/WASD locks up

I've just started. I'm only about 3 minutes into the game. In the house of Uncle Flavio, I had to quit because of the rapid-fire French, and I wasn't getting a chance to do anything on my own. Anyway, when I resumed from the menu, it was impossible to access anything with the mouse. Mouse didn't work, WASD keys didn't work. Please explain how the player is meant to move around if these features are incorrectly removed....
