Damage cap, wut???
So after 300 hours of gameplay, I decided on trying a build a little less common and more challenging (for me at least); a rogue-like. Starting with thief, I would place all points into vitality and dexterity and use nothing but bandits knife and longbow. Now as bad as bandits knife is, this means relying mostly on counters and backstabs along with some ranged combat. This took some time getting used to since you can't crit everything in the game. Not hard but slow going.

Around level 60 I noticed that a point in dex was no longer increasing damage with a Bandits Knife / Long Bow both +10. However, 2 whole points would increase damage by +1 making the dagger do 203 and the bow 280. FOR A B AND S MODIFIER? cmon... I know that it's quick/ranged damage but we're still talking MINISCULE (YA I SAID MINISCULE) numbers here..

I kinda feel robbed of 15 hours of gameplay. Does anyone know if damage for these weapons is soft capped? If so I have to give up on this char and probably the game.

Dex stops getting a good damage ratio after 40-50, and they nerfed the criticals

Sooooo I did waste my time? It seems like the reward should be there for those willing to risk defense.. If ♥♥♥♥ doesn't scale does that basically mean there's only ONE ENDGAME CLASS? ♥♥♥♥♥♥ time for Torchlight 2.

All scaling, for every stat, gets HUGE diminishing returns at 40 (the kind-of exception is strength, where you get +50% when 2h, so the returns kick in at 27 str (27 x 1.5 = 40.5)).

The only time you want to put in more points in something over 40 is when it has a huge stat requirement (like 50 str for the Dragon King Greataxe), or if you want more equip load, or if you want to squeeze out all that HP

Yeah so, assuming you stop putting points into stats that stop scaling, we all end up with the same build eventually. Right?

Why put points into dex if it's not doing anything?
Move onto the next stat..
Oh this stopped scaling too..
Move onto the next stat..

That sounds awful and I am sad now :(

That's why people who want to PVP don't just keep levelling. If everyone levels up to 150-200+ SL then yes everyone will start getting similar stat allocations due to the diminished returns. The vast majority of people who PVP though do not go any higher then ~120, with most of them not even breaking 100.

Starting as the Wanderer class, getting your Vit, End, Str and Dex to 40 and not touching any of the other stats will put you at SL 119. From that point on unless you're going to start putting some stats into Intelligence and Faith so that you can use some spells and use a weapon like the Greatsword of Artorias, there isn't really too much more deviation that you can make with the class stats wise.

It's why items play such a bigger role in your build. Two characters of the same SL with simular stats can be vastly different depending upon what items/spells they are using.

Keep in mind also that if you have the skill you can level only as much as is needed to use whatever weapon, keeping your level low so that you PVP against other low level players. This adds a whole new dimension to the game.

Yea the only thing that sucks is you get a lot of hackers who put their guys to vit lvl 99 which is 1900 hp along with all their other stats(which is kind of unconfirmable and they basically wait around for lowever level pvpers(even at 120 your low level) and they basically wipe the floor with you. so you are kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ either way lol.
Reading all of this actually brings alot more sense to this game's mechanics. I now know what to do. Thanks!

Damage does indeed diminish but it isn't capped until 99. Which is another interesting bit of info, two-handing a weapon gives you a 50% boost in strength, so after 66 Strength your two-handed damage bonus starts to drop (66 * 1.5 = 99).

Also smaller weapons might have a lower damage ratting, but remember you hit much faster with them, it's not damage per second but damage per hit.

Also consider adding weapon buffs to smaller +15 weapons, they generally don't scale on the weapon's damage so you benefit more from them then on slower weapons.

That might not always be a hacker though. Keep in mind that as a darkwraith you invade your lvl and up, no limits. So if someone is waiting for some high level pvp in the burg (NG+), and you invade expecting an easy gank... well things get ugly pretty fast.
