Don't know if anyone's posted this yet, but here's a link to an extremely helpful build calculator, with pretty much anything you can imagine. Plan around weapons, stats, spells, whatever.

Some additional stuff - useful download, too - but its still pre patch 1.6. So false values for elemental weapons for example. Still useful.

Ah, good to know, but no one should build around an elemental weapon anyway.

Why - I beat the game using a fire and a lightning Uchikatana. Works great exept for the catacombs.

They do work great, and I finished my first game with a +10 Great Scythe, but when you want more of a challenge or to take part in PvP, it's not really recommended. PvE is more challenging if you work with a particular stat and a weapon that works with that stat, and in PvP you'll piss a lot of people off bringing +5 lightning weapons to a fight.
