Stated otherwise, relying on level to determine a "fair fight" when equipment is 99% of what levels the playing field, is inanely stupid. It is quite obvious they they intended players to level up as they played. NOT leveling and thowing firebomb on everything through the game, just so you can gank low levels was obviously not intended: oh, wait, they haven't fixed it, so I actually think it IS intended: which is horribly design leading to what is occurring.
Playing a game for over 100 hours does not mean you have experianced every possible situation the game had to offer. What your describing could occur in Demon Souls, and it also occurs in Dark Souls. Is it an exploit? No, people are just playing the game without leveling up. Quite a few poeple do things such as that as challenges. Don't expect it to be "fixed" because its not broken in the first place. Any player could do the same thing it just takes time and patience.
Also, upgrading has its ups and downs. Choosing an elemental upgrade over a normal upgrade strips the weapon of its most useful feature: THE PARAMETER BONUS. I've slaughtered hordes of chumps like the one you encountered without the need of an elemental upgrade.
Also, most of the "cool kids" played on consoles and already have the game down while us PC noobs are all "lol what is this" or we're hacking because: lols.
