How do you Heal against Gwyn
This has been the hardest boss for me and the main reason is I can never heal. I have tried like over 10 times and I have never been able to heal without getting attack and losing even more health than how much I got.

When can I heal?

Rolling away from his grab attack with more than one roll gave me enough time to pop a humanity.

Just parry his attacks,if you lose some health in an attempt to parry, heal right after you parry-riposte.If you dont go super heavy against him,its not really wise to fight him openly otherwise like if you're a caster or any type of fast light armored build.

Just attempted this but I forgot to roll a second time and he killed me. I'll try this again next time.

I'm really bad at parrying. The only enemy ever in the game I had to parry was Havel and I had a hard time with that.

Well if it was me,i would try to get better at parrying. In almost all of my playthroughs,i used parries to defeat gwyn. Its just so much easier and faster rather than just going toe to toe against him.

The pyromancy ability ''Iron Flesh'' makes it a lot easier to land a parry,at least if you fail, you will be protected against his high dmg attacks.Pop an iron flesh just after the fog gate,he will rush you really fast anyway, time your key pressing and parry his swings,if you got a solid upgraded weapon that can dish out high dmg,it takes like 3-4 parries to kill him.

If i remember correctly,i may have even once parried his super jump attack from a distance.Thinking about it now,it may be possible, but surely it would be his hardest attack to parry.

To go off what Caspian said, stick with parrying. It really is easy. What I do is hunker down and hide behind my shield while waiting for him to go his four-hit combo. Now, the first two hits of this are fast (which is how you'll recognize it), but the third swing is slow, and very well broadcast. This is the attack you'll want to parry. And like Caspian said, well upgraded weapons can kill him in only a few hits. I had a +10 Fire Zweihander last time I went in and dropped him in 4.

If you can get him on a higher position most of his attacks are supposed to miss, also, I think it'd be easier to not get hit than to heal. I suppose you could try shield and spear and poke him to death, be kinda slow though I imagine.

Theres a giant stalagtite(?) you can get between the both of you. But yeah parries are great against him.

I use the giant stalagtite. "Don't get hit isn't very useful advice". Some of us aren't pro enough that we get hit once in a while.

if you have a +15 pyromancer's flame, power within, and great combustion you can stun lock gwyn.

One last bit of advice about parrying: the game basically sets up a practice field for you as you get to him. Like a lot of things in DS< I don't think that's on accident.

A series of knights that you can take on one at a time, that have varying movesets, and that telegraph those moves, as Gwyn does. Equip a low damage weapon so that you aren't one-shotting them with a parry-riposte (so you can parry each more than once), and practice away. When you can parry all of them, you should be fine for Gwyn. I always parry my way to him for that reason.

Yeah, really. Not even sure why the game has estus, considering it has shields. Or why resting at a bonfire heals you, for that matter.

I was already at the fog gate before I was told that parrying is really useful for this fight so I didn't have any time to practice with the dark knights unless I die. I decided to take it more slow and try not to lose any health at all.

I used the Great Scythe +15 and it did a great amount of damage even more than the fire claymore +10 which was what I was using last time.

I only ever lost health once from the grab but was able to heal using the suggestion given in this discussion. I still got hit while healing but I was able to heal more than how much damage I took so it was worth it.

I just blocked all his attacks with my shield while walking backwards and attacked at good times like after a grab and after he kicks. Boss was actually pretty easy now that I was able to heal.

Thanks for the help. For new game plus I'm going to practice more parrying and backstabbing.

Ouch. Would have helped to know you were trying to use fire claymore against him. Using slow weapons against him is hard because he has pretty quick recovery, and he has enough fire and lightning resist to basically nullify those attacks completely.

A great place to practice parrying is the Silver Knights in AL, particularly the Longsword ones. They have varied enough movesets to make it a challenge but won't kill you in one hit with a single connect. Backstabs are a little easier to practice, but it helps to have a better move speed than whatever you're trying to stab. Good places to practice that are the Bandit in the Darkroot Forest, any Black Knight, and the Darkwraiths in New Londo.

I was trying to use the Fire Claymore because a youtube video on how to beat this boss said to use one because he has a weakness to fire. The wiki also said he had a weakness to fire so I tried that weapon first. Didn't do a lot of damage so I switched to the Great Scythe and was able to take him down much easier with that.
