DarkSaves - Lightweight Save Manager I've Made (For Speedrun Practice)
Hey guys,
Just finished a save manager; so I could practice BKH runs more easily. I know I'm not the only one who would benefit from this so I thought I'd post it up here.

It's fairly simple, at it's root - it just copies your DRAKS0005.sl2 save file into a given 'run' folder, then allows you to load it back in. So you do still have full control of everything, files are just in folders next to your save data. But it does make it a lot easier than manual Alt+Tabbing to sort saves repeatedly.

As well as this, it hooks into AutoHotKey (which I imagine a lot of people will have for making streaming/WSplit hotkeys work) - so you can save/reload entirely within game.

Very simple tool, hope it's useful - I'm alwaus happy to answer anything.

Thanks!

It would also be good for dealing with hackers.

Heheh, definitely true - I hadn't really thought about it as a backup tool till now. But thinking about it - I guess it would also allow you to keep more than 10 characters by splitting them into different files.
This will be stupidly useful as this game has a bad habit of erasing or corrupting saves.

Not that another program is going to do harm but, DSfix already has a backup option. And pretty much everyone uses DSfix..

If all it's being used for is backups, I'd agree there's perhaps no reason not to just use DSfix.

However, where this is useful, is being able to quickly reload your game back to the last save; especially if you use the AutoHotKey - you can reload from in-game. As well as that, since you're choosing when to save (not a timer) you can make sure it's at the important times - 15minutes on DSfix is more than enough to have completed an area + boss, which isn't something you'd want to lose.
Just been playing about with this today to make sure there's nothing I've missed. One thing I've found is that you can want to save, but the game doesn't actually save onto your file for you - so loading it back will return you a good 20-30 seconds before.

So far, the ways I've found of forcing the game to save are:
- Quitting
- Using Bonfires
- Picking up items
- Changing Equipment, even just unequiping/requipping your axe.
Are there any other ways you can make the game save at a specific point?
all of the bumping
Such great thinkings

Haha, pressing start and exiting the overlay saves it. It also saves whenever you get souls. You don't need to unequip anything etc.
Do we have to turn off dsfix autobackup feature in order to use this tool properly?

PS it sounds awesome. thanx for your hard work

Since it's so simple in how it works; I don't see any reason dsfix autobackup couldn't run at the same time. Whether you want to have to manage two sets of backups/saves though is a different matter :P

I don't get how I load a game...

I start DarkSaves.exe > I set the path to my savegame > I made a new Set and I saved my savegame. After walking a little bit around, I've tried to Alt-Tab and click the load button, nothing happens.

I have also no idea how to set the hot keys... :-(

Sorry to hear you're having some trouble Paladin.
To load the game, you need to be back on the main-menu, otherwise it autosaves back over the loaded data. It's unfortunately just a problem from how the game handles save data.

For hotkeys, you need to use a tool called AutoHotKey and edit it as per instructions - this is just because DarkSouls steals all hotkeys from the windows-event cycle; so unfortunately it needs an additional program to handle it.

Hope that helps :)
