Absolution not working?

I started a new character and decided to see if I could kill the NPCs (except the blacksmiths and some merchants). I killed the cleric near Firelink, which was fine. I requested absolution from the guy after ringing the first bell.

After playing more, there are more clerics and the woman that is praying near Firelink now. They always attack me whether I'm in human form or not. Eventually, I took out the two guys and then went back to the church to be absolved again (cost 17.5k that time). Yet when I go back to Firelink, the woman is still there and still gets upset with me. I ended up taking her out because Firelink is my happy place.

Any idea why absolution didn't work in this case?

There's sth on the wiki abt if u kill Petrus b4 Reah's company arrives they will always be hostile regardless of absolution.
