:D The best way to fail.
They're just a straight upgrade from normal. Even at +4 they're better than +15. You really don't use much durability in pvp, so if you're willing to invest the time into farming then there's no downside to using one.
They work well in PVP. VERY well. Dude came after me with a crystal shotel and needless to say in about two seconds I was dead.
I'd reckon especially at the four kings boss fight squezing that every little of bit extra dps is awesome since you would want to avoid getting swarmed by 4 of em and ending the fight asap.
The whole farming process though is at it's least tedious when you're actually already at the end of the game, namely The Kiln of Flame. There you can farm the knights for 2 guaranteed chunks of titanite. Assuming that Kingseeker Frampt is avaible in your playthrough you can then keep divinding the chunks into the amounts you require.
Since 1 chunk = 3 large = 9 titanite shards.
With the amount of souls you'll be farming from that you can also just buy some shards from the blacksmiths. 800 titanite and large 3800. I wouldn't recommend it for the large ones though that really adds up. I'd say though pick 1 or 2 weapons to turn into crystal and only use them during bosses. You might also want to consider a crystal shield.
Ow and if you do go the crystal route do farm up on those chunks so you can upgrade your crystal weapons as a means to repair them before you go NG +.
Otherwise it's farming them darkwraiths.
But to be honest, katanas seem like about the worst thing to turn crystal. Even a shotel makes more sense: it's not used as a main weapon for the most part.
