Lautrec of Carim is not at the Firelink shrine

I freed him of his cell and spoke to him afterwards, but now, he's not in cell nor at the firelink shrine so where could he be?

Yes, I defeated the gargoyles now (which wasn't that hard) and now Lautrec sits in front of the cell.
