your preference on long swords or greatswords?
i know it depends on personal playing style, but i've seen way more people using greatswords over longswords. i like having a shield and the ability to attack semi-fast, but i could get used to dealing huge ass damage. right now im warrior w/ sl 25 with most stats in vit(20) Endur(20) and streng(17). it appears that theres a better selection of greatswords too. what do u think? also i just found merchant in sewers who has a crystal longsword and greatsword. i currently hav a +4 longsword. should i upgrade?

Longswords have (my opinion) the best and most diverse moveset of any weapon really. Vertical, horizontal, thrusts. Pretty much everything. That being said the longsword does have its limits, mainly in the damage department. Unfortunately you wont really do much better than just a normal longsword for damage, you can still have it do really good damage through upgrades/buffs but greatswords do offer bigger damage potential.

It is ultimately your choice, the biggest thing you will be trading is speed for damage. Dont bother with the crystal weapons, or at least dont bother upgrading them since they cannot be repaired and once it breaks thats it. The claymore is a great quality greatswords that you can try out its not too hard to obtain, also there is the manserpent greatsword that you will have the opportunity to get a bit later one that is one of the more impressive greatswords in the game in terms of damage.

I agree with ARF about the versatility of longswords; but in favor of greatswords, we should mention not only their superior damage-dealing but their sweet sweet ability to break through crazy levels of poise like it's nobody's business: There's almost no enemy that can't be staggered by *one* strong attack with the Zweihander --even some bosses can't resist it.

This is especially useful against enemies with slow attacks/slow recovery time (like the serpent men, capra and taurus demons): You bait them into hitting air/floor once, hit back, roll away, repeat. The Zwei can make, for instance, travelling through an otherwise terrifying place like the Demon Ruins almost trivial.

Edit: I just remembered the Zwei is actually ultra-greatsword. But hey, it's the natural evolution of a GS anyway :P

I use the Man serpent great sword, it has an A rating on strength and a nice moveset.

Buffed with Crystal magic weapon this thing is killer in PvP and PvE :3

Longsword: Versatile moveset, fast, lower damage, slightly shorter range

Greatsword: Versatile moveset (for some of them), medium speed and fast on some attacks, medium damage, medium range

Ultra-Greatsword: Fun but not so versatile moveset, slow, huge damage, semi-long range, and huge poise break potential

it depends on you but longsword type wepons are more reliable in pvp
great and ultraswords are realy easy parry and dodge by roll but devastating to poise, beware.
its more about training with weapons to fully uderstand potencial they have

Hey, since we are on the subject, what's the community opinion on the Great Lord Greatsword?

I was really looking forward to using Gwyn's almighty sword (I already had found out it wouldn't deal fire damage but I was OK with that), I spent quite a bit of resources on building it and taking it to +4, but it's been really underwhelming so far: It's surprisingly short-ranged, UNBELIEVABLY slow (seriously, the zwei almost feels like the Gold Tracer in comparison O_o), and even at +4 it doesn't do anywhere near enough damage to justify all those shortcomings.

Am I missing something or is it just one of those troll items the game likes to throw at us?

It's more of an RP weapon than anything else. I would compare it to the GSoA, in that it's an iconic weapon with little practical use.

It has worse scaling than the claymore but more base damage. At 27str/40dex GLGS actually out damages the claymore. I would say the claymore has a much more versatile moveset however.

well did u know that gwyn sword is poise breaker ? It can easily break any poise with just light attack
but I do agree with you about the underpower part .....
NoteTaker Apr 28, 2013 @ 10:32pm
I generally prefer longswords, so far, but that's because I like its quicker speed, try to keep the equip. load light, and my character's strength isn't the top stat (thus, meeting the requirements takes longer).

Nope, IIRC, they nerfed just about every poise-breaking Greatswords out there. Only Zwei and Greatsword (the ultra one) can break poise in 1 hit now.

straight swords > greatswords in PVP
straight swords < greatswords in PVE
Most people in PVP have 53 poise to counter greatswords. Speed wins in PVP so straight swords are obviously better. An example is BSS is highly regarded.
Greatswords slaughter in PVE. Since enemies don't move too much, you can hit them easily. Later on, enemy defenses in PVE will get so high that straight swords will only chip them while greatswords can get a chunk of their damage in.

As for great lord greatsword, it's a very powerful greatsword for low-stat. Only problem is that it can't be buffed. Power-wise, do not underestimate the weapon. Meeting requirements alone will grant over 400 damage. Its scaling is D/D but the base damage is immense so the bonuses it gets is still quite high. This was the greatsword to go to for low stat until obsidian came out which surpasses it up to a certain point.

Yeah especially with the darkmoon ring. What's the point of having a weapon that can deal a lot of damage if by the time you try to attack they're already a mile away?

i use the longsword all the time with my elite knight balanced build and elite knight speed build.

But if you want to use a straight sword use the balder straight sword, its 2 handed strong attack does damage that rivals any greatsword and u only need to put points in to dex.
