Tips for soloing Ornstein and Smough?
Doing it with a +5 Zweihander, Silver Knight Shield and some Giant and Gold-Hemmed equipment. Who should I kill first?

get a +10 zweihander...if you want it to be easier kill ornstein first, big smough isnt tough. if you cant doge well use iron flesh and tank them both while they wail on you you should be able to kill one of them.

Solaire is pretty useless fight wise, but he's good as a decoy so you can focus on whichever one you want to take down first.

A +10 Zwei is a mean beast, but I would rather use something faster (especially for Ornstein, he's one nimble ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥).

Also, remember that they're both rather sensitive to fire (and that Ornstein is resistance to lightning, as well as both "Super" versions), so you might wanna get some resin.

Personally, every time I took them down I was using some kind of fire or chaos weapon, with some pyromancies to spice things up. Quelaags Furysword is a great option (especially if you can take it to +5 and pair it with 10 liquid humanities). Great Combustion is surprisingly effective too, even against Super Ornstein, who in my experience is the hardest way to go.

Finally, be especially careful with the lightning-buttslam of both "Super" versions, it's just about their deadliest move, and the hardest one to survive if you didn't get away in time, as its huge AoE makes it virtually impossible to dodge or block. If you see them jumping up, sprint the hell away.

I usually solo them with some Pyromancy, but I think this might apply for melee.

Hit fast and hard, you want to get 1-2 attacks in then scram. Take advantage of Ornstein's speed as a opening to attack either one.

Kill Ornstein first if you aren't going for their items. He easier to seperate because he charges at you and his Super form is really tough. That and Ornstein is manage with good rolls or a decent shield, no matter your Stamina level.

The Super buttstam itself is easy, move alittle and then block(hopefully with a good lightning resist block). Super Smough is easy, but he hits even harder, mistakes will generally be punished swiftly.

+5 is really weak at that point, you want +10. Pyromancy is viable to anyone with 12+ Attunement, just a thought if you've got the souls to power it up enough.

Dude just summon solaire, he will keep any one of those 2 distracted, smogh is more dangerous for him because of the ass slam and the tackle, but if you have a good weapon and can take out ornstein fast, go for it.
Ginseng Apr 23, 2013 @ 1:08am
I have beaten them with every type of weapon and magic, you can easily hit ornstein with running attacks from a great-sword/axe/hammer a 2nd hit will usually stagger him, if you catch him while he is trying to dodge you get bonus damage which is awesome.

Ornstein is weak to fire, smough is super weak to lightning but has next to no resistances or defense to begin with so you can use anything against him.

you can summon solaire he does some distraction for you but the title of this thread includes the word "SOLO" which to me means no NPCs.

The major thing thats going to help you right now is upgrading your stuff as far as you can go. If you have 22 dex you can use a silver knights spear which has a long range and if you have a shield upgraded you can attack through the shield with the spear, you will have to carefully manage your stamina, i might recomend buying some green blossoms from the crestfallen merchang in sen's fortress which will dramatically increase your stamina regen. You can use the range of the silver knight spear to attack smough when ornstein is behind him with relative saftey as ornstein can attack through smough but will not reach you with normal attacks if you are standing at optimum range for the silver knight spear. You could also kill the demons outside the main cathedral for the demon's spear which does lightning damage and has the same range as the silver knight spear, its good for smough not so much ornstein you would need to switch weapons when you get to big ornstein.

Ornstein can be poisoned you can buy poison arrows or poison throwing knifes from the undead merchant female and poision him and run, you can also from what i hear inflict him with the toxic status by throwing dung pies at him(you can buy these at the undead merchant female as well). Toxic is stronger than poison but dung pies also can make you toxic so be careful.

Upgrading your zweihander could be a pain because you would have to leave anor londo, if you get the demon spear you might have some demon titanite to upgrade it some or the silver knight spear takes twinkling titanite which you can buy from the gaint blacksmith(8000 souls each so 80000 total) which wouldnt be too hard to farm by killing everything around the boss/blacksmith a few times.

The first time i beat smough and ornstein, which was an ordeal as i was illequiped, i used a lightning bandits knife on smough, and a crystal halberd(can be found in a mimic chest near the first bonfire in anor londo) on big ornstein, i also tried with the occult club(found with the mimic in the room with havel's armor) and got close, you could try that as well.

Good luck man, props for soloing them, everytime i fight them for someone i feel like im robbing them of the game...none of my friends appreciate that fight like I do....

Upgrade your Zwei to +10 and remove all armor/clothing. Make your way over to Smough and circle him until he is between you and Ornstein. Keep Ornstein behind Smough for the entire fight. Watch out for that glide-lunge attack of his as he can still go around Smough with it. Stay close to Smough, but don't necessarily hug him. Wait for one of his hammer smashes or his butt slam attack. Dodge and follow up with a jump attack. Rinse and repeat until Smough is dead. For Super Ornstein, just stand between his legs and hack away. Whenever he starts to attack, run behind him a little. When he tries to do his butt slam just run away until the lightning dissipates.

I can't believe that you guys would recommend he summons solaire when he's saying he wants to solo them.

Who to kill first is up to you. The items you can get for defeating them depends on who you kill last.

KIlling Smough first = Bad ass Ornstein. Your in for a tough fight. If you do manage to defeat Ornstein last you can buy his armour from a merchant in firelink shrine.

Killing Ornstein first will be a much easier fight against Smough as the last boss. Which is the route I took after dieing countless of time to "Super/Giant" Ornstein.

I reckon having that ring that boost your stamina regeneration (forgot what is called) Would help out. You can find it at the place you go before ash lake. That is if your willing to back track to get the ring.

Good Luck!

You must take your time and NOT be greedy. One hit then roll away, always in a backing up motion. If you use the backing up motion, you can get them to group together so you have them in your sight. Use the pillars to block their charge attack. Also, pay attention to the lines in the floor as they are your guide for when you are backing up. That way, you don't get hung up on a pillar or wall obtrusion.

i would recomend doing a few practice runs where you go in and try to dodge them as long as you can if you can and see if you can go that route, if not go get iron flesh it sounds like you have pyromancy, also if you have a grass crest shield use that and just put it on your back for some more stamina regen.

I just made a strategy that worked for me on the first try!!!!! it was my third try (when i tried this strategy) and seriously it worked,so i thought i could share it.To do what i did,get a ton of arrows (maybe 500 standard arrows) of course the best damage/speed ratio is good, also some good pyromancy spells (great chaos fireball maybe) and summon solare (also good gear would be nice).Enter the boss fight, and distract the bosses with solare, kill ornstein with some nice pyromancy spells (you might need to use something else too, also try to hit smough in the process too),after smough absorbs ornsteins power, get a pillar straightly between you and smough (i mean exactly between,so he can't hit you) and keep a distance to his attacks.take out your bow and arrows and start shooting, but note that when smough is standing still, your arrows can't hit him because of the pillar,so hit him while he swings his from down to top vertically, and you should be able of placing a few hits on him.Continue this until he is dead, and also move around the pillar to keep it between you and his hammer. This is of course a very tedious process,so it requires patience, and you also shouldn't get greedy.this got me through the first try,and i hope you understood what i said

It's not a solo strat tho, Personally what I did is always make sure I could see Smough and Ornstein, Getting rid of smouth first simply because at the time he was able to 1 hit kill me lvl 20SL run, so Taking out ornstein was the ideal choice, honestly of the two I'd say he's got the more predictable moveset when in his super form, all of his moves are extremely telegraphed and you can often roll back or assume "giant neutering position" and stick between his legs as it's a dead zone

Solaire always dies immediately for me and does nothing, all he does is bump up the bosses hp a ton

Well on my 4th try on that boss, I just kept smough behind a pillar and bashed ornstein to hell. 2nd phase is easier since smough is even more stupid and can be kept behind pillar and bashed to hell after he attacks the pillar. Had demon knight sword +5, but essentially if you can kill ornstein first, dps aint issue, just patience.

I find Ornstein's 2nd phase much more benefitial than smough's as teaches you to roll much better
