There's a ladder in the pinwheel room which will take you to the tomb of the giants. I hope you went there after anor londo at least, it's a hard area for first timers.

The depths lead to blighttown,the catacombs just leads to the tomb of the giants which is a end game area.

Pinwheel was made to be an optional first boss... so there really wans't any problem on killing him before even going to blighttown.

If you've killed the Gargoyles, you should now go to lower undead burg (through the door in the bridge of the Hellkite drake), there you'll fight Capra Demon. He will give you the key to the depths.

Exploring the depths you'll kill Gaping Dragon. He will give you the key to blighttown...

And that's how you get there. (Without using shortcuts of course)

There's a shortcut to blighttown through Valley of Drakes, but I think it's probably best to avoid that if this is your first playthrough.

The shortcut is better. Upper Blighttown is mostly you get gangbanged or fall to death. Seriously. I had to shoot down like 6 of those mutant undead before going in, only to get ganked by 2 fire dogs and 2 more mutant undead. Place is a ♥♥♥♥ up there.

I agree that blighttown is annoying (Not as annoying as Tomb of Giants though), but there are a few useful treasures there.. like Iaito, Powerwithin and Shadow set. That's why I usually think it's best to use the shortcut only if you're already familiar with the game and know exactly what you want to loot.
