I have found the solution! After fixing my gfWL with this solution, "Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features, clicked on Windows Live Essentials 2011 and used Uninstall/Change and the setup gives you the option "Repair all Live Programs" pick that one.", i restarted my computer, verified the game cache and started dark souls up! It worked. Please post if this worked for you.

you just need to uninstall game for windows LIVE and MARKET in control panel essential is not in the probleme,and in admin the gameforwindowslive.exe locate in DS files REDIST

I had a similar problem like you did. (i think). What I did was, run "DXSETUP", in the REDIST folder. Aswell as what PhilisterX said run "Gfwlivesetup". (both of these .exe are in their own folder - One is called DirectX and the other is GFWL ).
Then to top it off verify cache and run the game. and It worked.

You can locate the folder here - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\REDIST.

Hope this helped.

i have another problem now.ö if i start DS, a window appears that tells me that DS PtD executable does not work anymore and the programm went down.
How can i fix this?

I'm having the same issue, when I start dark souls, it never launches but I can see it running in task manager under processes, also something that seems to be related to DS, Data.EXE *32. If I end that process, Dark Souls ends as well. So it's running but never reallys starts. I've tried deleting and re-installing on steam. I've tried run "DXSETUP", in the REDIST folder and "Gfwlivesetup". Followed by a reboot and a verify integrity. The strange thing is that this game worked when I first installed it a few months ago.

I was having the same issue on my laptop running Windows 8, "The Ocho". It was a GFW Live issue. Following the instructions here fixed it for me:

@emanuel
does not work for me. Also i have windows 7 64bit and not windows8. but still tried your "guide".
Now, after i start gfwl, the black window appears, where it says windows live marketplace, but then another window appears with "gfwl does not work" and it shut down,

so it has something to do with the gfwl. cause i installed resident evil 5 now and it started. after i logged into gfwl ingame, it had a update. i started the update and then i got the same error as in dark souls. "The game does not work anymore".
So the game files should be ok. i cant even start gfwl seperately, the same error appears

Hmmm....did you try to uninstall Games For Windows Live — both the Marketplace client and the Redistributable? Then install gfwl. Some say version 3.3 functions better, others say it doesn't matter...

doesnt work, cause if i install the 3.3 version, it says that i have to update it. after that, i get the same error as above when i star it.
