You cant block in dark souls

your trying to block what? are you pressing L1?

Whatever hand your shield is in, that button blocks. So if it's in your right, it's R1. If it's in your left, it's L1. If it's sitting in your inventory, it doesn't do anything.

umm, shields do not punch. small shields make an action that looks kinda like punching, for parrying.. perhaps whatever you are trying to block has high enough poise to make your block ineffective. What type shield is it? And your stats. Also if you are unable to properly use an item, the game will still let you equip it, but it makes the item worthless.

[edit] Heavy shields CAN punch. But you would know if you had one on cause your STR would need to be quite high. Is the shield equipped? as in IN your hand? you can go offhand, and that might explain the punching.

No.I still use phones built into the wall with a wire.And a phonebook

Im assume since i can see the shield near my hand and out of a menu it is equipped

Make sure your shield is in the left hand 1 slot, and make sure you're pressing l1 to block, l2 will parry.

You could also learn to roll away from attacks and counter. I do this if my bow is out but I don't yet want to stop using it, Can set you up for a nice backstab. Assuming your sword doesn't just punch too. :P

If you are using a third party controller, the L1/L2 might be flipped.
