Are you wearing the Covenant of Artorias? It's the ring you get for beating Sif in Darkroot Garden. If you don't have it you'll die when you make the jump to the Abyss.

Make sure you have good poise, and if you have Magic Barrier or Great Magic Barrier that will help a LOT. (just make sure the Transient Curse's effect wears off before jumping as you can't use any self-buffs while Transient Curse is in effect)

you have to go all the way down the stair case? because sometimes i try to not and sometimes i die like i hadnt the ring equiped
