most area will give you a good extra challenge (not a one shot situation unless you are still at 20 VIT) even with some high end gear. it's a biased opinion but NG+ (and further) is the way to see if your build is reliable enough or not.
there is also a lot of pvp and coop in ng+ and seeing how some bosses can become insane it's a good point
3 reason:
1. the challenge
2. item/achievement collecting. need to complete ng+ and beat sif in ng++ or trade to get all achievements and boss weapons
3. story - you cannot both give the soulvessel to frampt and kath.
Getting stronger: You can still level up a lot in NG+. Things slow down somewhere around NG++ or NG+++. You won't go up 100 levels like in NG, but 40-50 for NG+ is reasonable.
One-shotting: Not yet, you have to wait until NG+++++ to get one-shot by almost everything. Make sure you have proper armor and stuff like that. All your armor items should be +9 or +10 by now.
BK weapons are plenty for NG+. Just keep upgrading your STR and DEX and they'll get stronger through stat scaling. (Until you reach 50 per stat.) Once again, you'll feel them lacking in NG+++++ and onwards, but that's very far away. Havel's is overrated and is needed very rarely. Something lighter along with more dodging might be better, but whatever suits you. My opinion is that it slows you down too much. Also a good shield is more important than armor if you block a lot.
Point in NG+: The story is the same. I kept playing because I liked the game and wanted to play it again and again. It is also a challenge. From O&S and later, it will be harder than NG. Another point is getting items you previously didn't know about or missed, going to places you didn't visit and stuff like that. You can also make one a full run, another playthrough a quickrun etc. You can also try different playing styles. Whatever you like. And no one forces you. If you don't feel too engaged by the game, feel free to move on to another game, e.g. DS2.
In terms of character strength, you're not going to get much stronger than in NG - in fact, I'd go as to say you only get slightly weaker, as enemies just get more HP, and deal more damage. 40-40 in both Str and Dex are the "most" damage you're going to be doing, but, I strongly recommended getting Power Within and either Crystal/Great Magic Weapon - either by a ring slot, or the right level of Attunement - to help compensate for the damage needed, and after 40 Str/Dex, 40 Endurance - stamina caps at 40 End, and only "extra" stamina is added from FaP ring. The rest of your points should be spent into either more spell slots, or more Vitality... the more HP, the better.
Very rarely will you get one-shot by "trash" enemies. It can happen, like, getting stunlocked by a Darkwraith, or maybe getting hit with low Vitality and no armor in NG+6. Most insta-kill attacks I can think of are... Crow Demons' grab attack, Smough's butt-slam or shoulder-barge, and the wall-hugger in Blighttown - the one guarding Power Within. Bosses may be able to combo-kill you easily - Gwyn is a HUGE culprit of this in NG+ and beyond... but - this is all based on your own skill, as well.
"Hard" souls do become obsolete, but, don't just trash them! You don't know how many times I've been about 5k souls away from a level, had no enemies or bosses around, and I would need 100k or more to level again - it's a big risk when you start to "finalize" your character, and you'll get used to carrying over 200k souls on your person, like it's nothing; having those little bumps to ease having to risk it longer always helps. Not to mention, you can use those souls to buy stuff like resins, spells, different weapons and upgrade materials to keep things less stale - everything. There is no such thing as a "wasted" soul, unless you die and lose your bloodstain. Hell, look up the Frampt values, to know how to min-max souls, like, Large and regular Souls of a Lost Undead are actually worth MORE to Frampt, as well as Soul of Quelaag and Moonlight Butterfly.
My final verdict is, like I said in the start: only do it, if you want to, and enjoy the game. Dark Souls 2 is a BIT better in this aspect, since you can respec, but, playing the same build, same look, same everything will get stale, and you'll want different things. Dark Souls is also harder to make a "mix" build - or merge one into one later on; the further you go forward, the harder it is to go back. Try out a caster class, glass cannon, speedruns, challenge runs, explore, full-clear the game, try to glitch bosses, try making a PvP character, try shooting for a specific level - Dark Souls is a very linear game, for being an RPG, and it's easy to fall into a "rhythm", so, experiment and have fun!
there's no mechanism other than YOU performing levelling that would make your char stronger/different
NG+ means the conditions around you changes, not you & your stats
so the point is obvious - you're there with far more powerfull enemies to deal with, that's all..
(also - it's quite easy to make it with sl1-10 char, so you adjust your expectations accordingly)
Seems like your character does get relatively weaker with each NG iteration and there's no 'twist' to it to keeps things fresh/different. I don't think I'll finish NG+ but I already ordered DS2 and I hope I'll like it :).
Yeah, I know dodging is more important than blocking, but I like being a little bit more tanky. When I killed Havel I immediately equipped his gear. Along with his ring I managed to get the mid-rool (swapping helmet and leggings for somethign lighter depending on the situation) and have one of the best (?) armors in the game. Seemed pretty good to me (and it looks awesome) :). Most of the time I used the Crest shield I think...don't know why. It worked pretty well against some enemies with magic damage so I just stuck with it for half the game :P (Havels for physical, shield for magic). My block:dodge ratio is probably about 50:50.
Well, best of luck in DS2. I think that the NG+ content in DS2 is a bit... sloppy, but still good... The addition of some extra enemies and phantom invasions is neat at first, but, after a while, it gets kind of old, and the game really decides to pull the "THERE ARE MORE ENEMIES - IS IT HARD YET!?" trick in NG+ - especially on bosses like Lost Sinner, and areas like Undead Crypt... I've done two full NG+ 7 clears of 2, and the DLCs, and I can officially say it's not harder, just more unfair; you'll die faster, even at 99 Vit, and most of the NG+ exclusive items aren't anything really special, just slightly better versions of items that already exist in the game. You'll also FEEL the weakening of your progression in NG+, which is, admittedly, what the game really needed in the first place, but, you'll notice that favorite weapons from DS1 (that's right, I'm looking at you, Great Scythe and BKH) are significantly lesser, and more in line of the statistic scaling... *cough* Rapier and Mace... *coughs out lung*
So, you are saying that there are actually more enemies in DS2 in NG+? At least something is different, even if not in a particularly good way :P.
And btw, which game takes longer to beat? DS 1 or 2?
Something like that, yeah. I mean, DS2 has some areas that are just littered with "trash" enemies that provide no real challenge, and just end up being more frustrating than difficult. NG+ in DS 2 does add some more enemies, and some special red phantom enemies, but, they're brokenly unbalanced, as some are meant to mimic PvP - like, Castle Drangleic, in NG, has you kill two enemies within the range of a door to open it, while you're being chased by at least six of the same enemies, and (I think) two larger, long-ranged, beefy enemies. This part isn't hard, but in NG+, the developers throw in a red phantom with tough armor and a lot of HP, and in later difficulties, he can one-shot you, at 99 Vitality if you're not careful; this guy not only moves faster than the soldier enemies, but he also swings his weapon further, has a longer aggro distance, and can break your poise - your ability to not stagger - in his spin-to-win combo - and the amount of souls he drops is almost not even worth it.
Another area that I flat-out don't like in DS2, in terms of NG+ enemies, is Iron Keep. It falls victim to the same area above, in that most of the enemies there are just annoying, but, the enemies there use katana-class weapons, and can hit you without hardly any warning, because you have little-to-no ability to read their attacks. A room that lets you skip the Smelter Demon boss is populated by two "elite" guards of that area, in NG+, which, yeah, you shouldn't skip parts of the game, but this requires you to move out of the room, get back in, pray you don't get stabbed in the back getting onto the ladder in it, and then not die from the archers shooting at you, and two more "elite" enemies on top of where the ladder leads. Imagine the Anor Londo archers, but, four of them, all in different directions...
In terms of length, I'd say... My average clear time for a "casual" DS1 run is about... 3 hours or less? My average speedrunning time for it is 2 and a half, or a little less. DS2, casually, less than 2 or so hours, and sometimes an hour and a half or so for a speerun, but, I'm not as well-versed in it as I am with 1; DS2 can be finished in under an hour, if you know what you're doing, but, it's still a good game, in my opinion, even if the story is lacking, and the game is very "laid back" compared to DS1's philosophy of "Learn how to dodge every attack, every second, every enemy - ever!" The combat is MUCH more smooth in DS2, the weapon progression is fast and simple, and the actual depth of your character feels a bit more personal than in 1, in that, armor and weapons can mix and match to make cool combos; the DLC is better in DS2, despite how much I love the Oolacile portion of DS1... but... to each their own . :)
The gap starts at Anor Londo, because you'll realize Super Smough's shoulder-barge attack, even in full Havel's, will kill you in one hit, or his butt-slam; skeleton's in Nito's fight are incredibly annoying, and able to chip at you, cause a bleed-crit, on top of Nito's toxic effect or AoE attack - not including if you get hit by a skeleton dog's "falldown" attack, on the way there, which is nearly enough to kill most players; Demon Firesage/Stray Demon's fire blast will be insta/close death; Four Kings will be a panic-dance; Gwyn will kill you in one combo, or two hits; Artorias will punish all your mistakes, and you might not even be able to stagger him when he's buffing himself; Bloated Mages will come close to killing you in one hit; Manus' magic will kill you if you don't know the exact attack and time to roll, or use the pendant; Kalameet will kill you in one hit from his charge attack, or combo-kill you... Don't even get me started on the Crystal Hollows, or the 360-no-scope-swag-4204lyfe-blaze-it-yolo-swaggod Channelers...
