Level 31: Can't beat Bell Gargoyle Fight!?
I don't get it! Everywhere I look online recommends you to be level 10-20 for the Bell Gargoyle fight. I can take the first one down to half health pretty quickly if he doesn't just pin me in a corner and knock me off the building.

But when the second one comes out, I can't even get a strike in before one of them smashes me or catches me on fire.

How the hell can I be a Level 31 Warrior and not be able to get passed a level 10-20 fight!? I must REALLY suck...

Keep this in mind for the future. Also, pay attention to stat scaling on weapons.
From best to worst : S A B C D E
A longsword or claymore has a c in strength and a c in dexterity, so you should go for one of those if you're gonna be upgrading both stats. If you want strength, you can go for a zweihander found in the graveyard for a good early game strength weapon. The club or reinforced club is good too. If dexterity, the uchigatana is a good choice. You can get it from killing the undead merchant. The rapier is good for a dex build as well.

Drake sword doesnt have any scaling, so you should drop it after blight town and start upgrading something with a good moveset or good scaling.

If you can get the Balder Side Sword from a Balder Knight (rare drop) you'd be set on a dex weapon, it has a B scaling with dex that increases to A at +14(?) My first (and so far only playthrough) i mained with a +15 side sword and really didn't have any problems with dmg output.

Seeing this thread warms my heart with nostalgia.
This. Dark Souls was my first souls game, and the gargoyles took me freakin forever. Every boss did really. Since then I've played the crap out of every souls game. I picked up DS again and wiped out the gargoyles in like 30 seconds and I had to be no higher than level 20. Felt good :)
If you're still having a hard time with the gargoyles, regain your humanity and summon Lautrec and Solaire for the fight. you can just take a support role and chug estus when their health is low, and you can use a bow or sorcery to get some damage done too.

Level doesn't matter much in the game, it's mainly about your weapon upgrade level. You can be level 1 but as long as you have, say, a +5 halberd beating the gargoyles should be easy.

You can also level your shield so it better absorbs their attacks.

Resistance does actually boost your innate defense more than a typical stat would. But it still sucks because the defense boost is not worth the points lost elsewhere. For example, if you leveled Endurance instead of Resistance by 20 points you'd be able to wear much higher defense armor than you would get a natural defense boost from resistance, AND have higher stamina as well.

I'm not even sure what Resistance would equate to in the real world, considering people don't become any more resistant to poison or taking sword blows to their bare skin. It would probably be fine if it were taken out of the game entirely.

Well the idea was good, since players don't go naked( the majority) when you take a blow in a armor the concussive force exist fighters are the best representative of this, resistence to heat,to poison,to cold.
Of course in real life it is a incredibly slower process but today we have persons who drinks water poisoned with arsenic(might confused the substance) and don't die, the imune sustem works like that.

But in the game it is a joke nevertheless kk!

the side sword is one of the best dex weapons ,she is quick and enchantable, you hit absurds amounts with speed.

Step 3: get in rtsr
Step 4: learn 2 dodge
Step 5: Equip pine resin
Step 6: Wreck some gargoyles

I have a Knight Shield +5
I'm using the Drake Sword. I do have a Halberd however, just unupgraded. Would it be better to grind and upgrade my Halberd to +5 for this fight or stick with the Drake Sword?

Honestly, the only thing I'm having problems with now is the damn fire. When one is open for an attack, the other one is breathing fire. There's no way to block that fire. Usually I can try to run away and heal if I need to but eventually they'll just corner me and breathe fire on me until I die.
Quick advice in case you're still reading replies to this thread: Ditch the knight shield, it's rather bad, despite the way it looks.

The best shield in the game is the heater shield (sold by the undead merchant), as it only weighs 2 pounds and has 100% physical block, in addition to pretty high stability (the stat that decides how much stamina a hit to the shield is gonna consume) and a slight increase in 'parrying frames' (which makes it slightly easier to parry with).

But, honestly, just get rid of the knight shield. Any other shield with 100% block is gonna serve you better, simply because the knight shield is 'less than average'.

It should be noted that Dark Souls was made to have almost all available weapons and shields be viable through the entire game, and it is viable, it's just worse than other shields for some odd reason.

Shame when it's so purty though.
The Balder has higher stability fully upgraded, but weighs twice the amount and is a rare drop. It also looks sick as hell.

The best shield in the game is the heater shield
how nice of you to share your opinion with us and present it as a fact instead
Well, it is kind of a fact. it has the highest overall value compared to any other shield.

Let's compare it to the grass crest shield, tower kite shield, crest shield and balder knight shield.

Tower kite is a nice 'default' shield to compare by.

First off, resistances:
  1. Tower Kite Shield: --- 100% physical - 30% magical - 70% fire - 50% lightning
  2. Grass Crest Shield: -- 95% physical - 42% magical - 70% fire - 50% lightning
  3. Crest Shield: ----------- 100% physical - 80% magical - 55% fire - 45% lightning
  4. Balder Knight Shield: 100% physical - 20% magical - 60% fire - 50% lightning
  5. Heater Shield: --------- 100% physical - 30% magical - 70% fire - 50% lightning
As one can easily tell, resistances don't change a lot inbetween shields. The only ones here worth noting, is that the grass crest doesn't block 100% physical (a large negative), and that the crest shield can be useful for blocking magic damage.

Stability:
  1. Tower Kite Shield: --- 58 when unupgraded - 72 when fully upgraded
  2. Grass Crest Shield: - 51 when unupgraded - 63 when fully upgraded
  3. Crest Shield: ---------- 55 when unupgraded - 66 when fully upgraded
  4. Balder Knight Shield: 63 when unupgraded - 75 when fully upgraded
  5. Heater Shield: -------- 55 when unupgraded - 68 when fully upgraded
Grass crest is, once again not particularly good. The crest shield is also not that good, heater shield is in the middle and the tower kite and balder knight shields are in the lead.

Weight:
  1. Tower Kite Shield: --- 3
  2. Grass Crest Shield: -- 3
  3. Crest Shield: ----------- 3
  4. Balder Knight Shield: 4
  5. Heater Shield: --------- 2
If we take 3 as the 'default' weight of these fairly similar shields, then balder knight shield is 33% heavier, and heater shield is 33% lighter.

Additional effects:
  1. Tower Kite Shield: --- none
  2. Grass Crest Shield: - slightly increased stamina regen
  3. Crest Shield: ---------- none
  4. Balder Knight Shield: none
  5. Heater Shield: -------- slightly more parrying frames
The grass crest shield is made worthwhile by it's additional effect, which makes it good for people that two-hand weapons or usually don't use shields. Keeping it out or on your back will activate it's buff.

The heater shield is the only one out of these shields that's classified as a light shield, despite having the stats of a medium shield. This is why it grants additional parrying frames.

Overall, I just see the heater shield as the most reliable one of the bunch.

Edit: good lord, I really got into this.

Spider shield is best shield, man. Hang on let me get my graphs :)
Ursprünglich geschrieben von Teenage Dirtbag:
all heater shield is good for is parry fishing, since you can block 100% and it's light. balder and silver knight shield are way better if you actually want to block things. grass crest is just very versatile and can be used in any build, especially if you don't care about blocking
When you say 'way better', it's actually a 7 point stability difference (-9.4%) between heater shield and balder shield, while the balder shield weighs 2 points (+100%) more than the heater shield, and has worse elemental resistances.

Isn't it identical to the knight shield, only with poison resistance?
