Whats the advantage to being human?
Not trying to get existential here. Never played Dark Souls before, and after buying it years ago, finally have a laptop powerful enough to play it. So what do humanities do? I get you can get them as items and theyre safe that way, and once you use them, they get added to the big counter in the left corner, but then you lose them with your sould when you die. Or you can use the humanity at a bonfire to turn back to human form, and you turn back to a hollow when you die again.

So is there some advantage to being a human? Are you faster or more powerful or something? I dont see a big difference myself. And whats the benefit of hording soft humanities? what do they do other than sit there and wait to be taken away by death?

Being human allows pvp and coop.
Humanities in the counter [soft humanities] raise your curse resist and damage of chaos weapons. And kidle bonfires, give you item discovery bonus etc etc.

When you are in human form, you are able to summon other players into your world to help you by interacting with "summon signs" which appear on the floor (only visible while human).

On the other hand, while in human form you can be invaded by other players, who will try to kill you.

That's kind of the basics. There are other uses for humanity as the user above has already stated.

+Character looks good when human if you've done it right.

I don't like this. To me the DEF increase should also cap at 10 soft humanities.

Let's see...

-Humanities in the counter up to 10 will increase your drop rate and boost the damage of "Chaos" type weapons.
-Up to 30, you will have increased resistances. This is especially significant to Curse resist. The effect decreases beyond 10.
-Being in human form allows online play, including coop and invasions.
-Giving humanity will improve certain covenant ranks.

Beyond that, being in human form allows you to 'see' things you normally wouldn't, primarily the soapstone signs of NPCs, as well as allowing you to be invaded by special black phantoms. Unlike players, killing these special black phantoms will sometimes drop unique items or cause things to appear - for instance, right before Queelag, being human will allow you to be invaded by Man Eater Mildred who drops the Butcher Knife which can't be found anywhere else. The White Soapstone NPCs also have a tendency to be very helpful, and one or two can even solo a boss.
