elite knight armor is like the best medium armor in the game, or at least one of the best
it's all about poise/def/weight..
so - very obviously - if you're after something "best" in some regard, you'll end up with a mixture of pieces from different armors..
and - of course - upgrading matters a lot for certain pieces
Is it the best use of souls and titanite in the grand scheme of things? Not really, since you can just throw on Havels, or the Gold Hemmed Set, and not have to worry about armor. But if you care about fashion souls, then it's definitely worth it to upgrade your favorite armor of choice. Certain armors can also be quite strong when fully upgraded.
that's a good case how upgrading armor matters; dingy robe = 55 phys def when fully upgraded, now that's a number..
there are better and worse armors, but having it not upgraded at all and fully upgraded is day and night for the ones that matter..
and your argument "it's not good because nobody's gonna upgrade it, because you'd have to upgrade it" is somehow stupid in debate about whether upgrading is or is not viable protection wise.. do you hear it?
