About speedruns and getting the BKH (black knight halberd)

I see speedrunners using Black knight halberd very often. They get it by killing the black knight in dark root basin.
But isn't that a random drop without guarantee? So what happens when they do not get it, do they restart the speedrun?

Made 4 tries with 3 Hummanity and still nothing....

Are you doing any % or all bosses? Sorcery is best for all bosses but I guess you probably know this.

For 1 great speedrun, they have to try 100 times :D

It's not really a speedrun if you have to stop to farm 10 humanity. Since the halberd can be obtained before even fighting the gargoyles the max you can have is 4, 6 with starting gift if you chose thief.

That's where I am right now, after undead burg, before the gargoyle fight, I went straight to dark root basin to the black knight and right now if I used all humanity I could add up to 8 humanity.

You also can get hummanity by killing mobs as long as the area boss is alive. But you don't get it as drop, it just adds up to your current humanity count without notification.

you just have to get lucky. I don't believe speedrunners count on soft humanity drops or their current hard humanity for a higher chance to get the black knight halberd. just keep on restarting. you'll have to get used to it.

That is a pain in the ass, luckily I can manual save by moving the files temporarily. ;)

Really? I was under the impression that he had a 100% drop, I've gotten it every time I've killed him

That was my assumption too,
I got it on the first try when I killed him in NG and NG+ with my first character,
and also on the first try (NG) with the second character. (ofc those where normal playthroughs, before I started speedrunning)
Really odd.

Also I just cleared the depths with 5 humanity and I did not get a single humanity drop from the rats.
Strange. Seriously ?!
