The best in what way? The Baldur Side Sword and the Great Scythe are really popular.

The bss and great scythe are pretty amazing. If you're pvping, I've had a lot of fun with katanas, rapiers and the flamberge.

Other than the afore mentioned great scythe, I really like to use a +15 Ricards rapier with some pine resin of any kind, prefferably rotten. The heavy attack is amazing! The Lifehunt Scythe is also fun, albeit more gimmicky.

Ricard's rapier truly shines with a buff build. Get a good magic or faith buff on it and that thing is crazy.

It all depends on playstyle. Imo, some of the absolute tops are estoc, uchi, bss, and silver knight spear. For certain situations, gold tracer and shotel. Other decent dex weapons are flamberge, gargoyle tail axe, iaito, and maybe scythe. Non-dex weapons that still work well are claymore and halberd.

Estoc and silver knight spear are long poke weapons. Estoc is the strongest of all thrust swords, still gets crit bonuses, attacks faster than spears when shield attacking, and has a quick 2 hit running. Silver knight spear is the longest weapon in the game that has no split damage. Uchi and bss both have decent range, power, and attacks behind from left so it forces a fisher to go the other way.

Gold tracer and shotel are both excellent anti-turtle weapons. Gold tracer has the highest bleed buildup. Shotel passes through shields with its R2 attacks.

Flamberge and gargoyle tail axe are the two high poise breaking dex weapons. Flamberge is a bit underpowered but can bleed and stunlock with its R2. Iaito is an alternative to uchi. It's a little weaker but has a different R2 that some prefer over the slow stab that uchi has. Scythe is a very high damaging pole arm that be used very well in punishing.

edit: I'm talking in terms of PVP here.

I love using sunlight blade on it, I was suggesting resin because I was assuming they were running a build based on dexterity, endurance, vitality, and a touch of strength. Definitely agree on buffs if you have some good faith or intelligence, I like to get just high enough for crystal magic weapon and then use a darkmoon catalyst for sorceries and focus on faith, dexterity, and vitality. Then my rapier can be buffed away with sunlight blade and crystal magic weapon. Plus I get access to homing soulmass and a whole lot of fun miracles like WotG, Emit Force,Sunlight Spear/Great Lightning Spear, TWoP, Vow of Silence, and maybe some Great Magic Barrier.

I'd disagree with the big about the flamberge being underpowered. I've had a lot of success with it. Nice moveset, and it breaks poise fairly effectively.

Personally i like the katanas and bss. They're fast and i like the movesets, easy to do hit and run tactics with them. I feel most comfortable playing with them.

On paper, Great Sytche is probably the beastliest amongst the dex weps with its crazy dead angle potential.

If you're lazy, there's always the R1 spam of curved swords and spears.

"Best" would really depend on the player's playstyle and prefference.

I have to agree, playstyle has a huge role on what works best. I personally think katanas are overrated though, especially the uchigatana.

In terms of AR, flamberge is a bit underpowered. At 16/40, a claymore is maybe 10 less. 2H, a claymore exceeds it. Power isn't everything which is why I listed it. Its moveset is enough to make up for its slightly lower AR. Also just because one had lots of success with a certain weapon doesn't automatically make it good. I can say the same thing about whips since I had lots of success with it.
Please tell me i'm not the only one who could give to flying poopoo's about Multiplayer? I just meant the single player...

And you got plenty of answers.

Even if you're focused on PvE most everything stated here is still relevant. You also shouldn't worry too much about getting the perfect character if you aren't doing multiplayer, as you don't need the best to win the singleplayer. I would still recommend Ricard's Rapier and the great scythe. Though Priscilla's Dagger is also fun to toy around with.
Morgan Le They Mar 7, 2014 @ 6:26pm
You also can get very early access to the great scythe, which I do until I can get my rapier.
