Here's a tip: sometimes it's better to fight unlocked, especially while fighting some of the bigger enemies. You need to learn when it's best to be locked, and when it's best to unlock.
There is an option, camera auto wall recovery or something like that, I suggest you turn it off as it tends to spazz out and get your camera stuck on things, or make it move in strange and terrible ways. There is one bossfight in particular, if you have this on and lock the boss, the camera will get stuck looking straight up, while your entire screen is covered with crystals so you can't even see yourself, let alone the boss.

So, I don't think changing FOV is the same as cheating. They serves different purposes, one is to improve gaming experience and another is to win.
