I'm not saying it's a bad weapon, but the topic is "best beginner weapon." It requires 24 strength to wield Zweihander in one hand. Not only that, but until a "beginner" levels up stamina or finds equipment/items for stamina regeneration, it might not be a good choice for first time players of Dark Souls. The technical minimum to use a weapon isn't the only thing a beginner should be concerned about.
My comments aren't meant to disparage anyone's favorite weapon set. I don't understand the reference to Smough's Hammer. When someone makes it that far into the game, they aren't posting here asking for advice on "beginner weapons."
But, hey, no one has to take my word for it. Zweihander is an easy weapon to get by running through the graveyard. Level up just enough to two-hand it, like you said, and see how it works out.
If you can, try to get the tail of the dragon bridge shooting arrows for a while. At least for much of the beginning of the game, is the best weapon.
Yes, the Claymore on the bridge is a good choice. After you beat the Taurus Demon, you'll get to the bridge being guarded by the red drake. Run down the right side of the bridge ignoring the soldiers and head down the stairs you come to on the right. Do it right and you can avoid becoming undead toast. Just know that you'll be in a room right above your Undead Burg bonfire, and there's a ladder you need to activate (Press the A button on your gamepad at the top of the ladder) to create a shortcut between your bonfire and the bridge.
When you go back up on the bridge, run across directly to the opposite side from the stairs and hide for a moment from the drake's fire breath. Don't go out in the middle of the bridge, but back up a bit in the alcove you're in and either shoot the drake or just wait a minute. The moment the drake takes off from his perch, run towards the entrance it was guarding as fast as you can along the right side of the bridge and past the feet of the drake. If your equipment load is low, you shouldn't have any problem making it to the entrance before the drake sends his warm greetings your way.
As soon as you enter, pull the lever on the left just inside the entrance and go up into Undead Parish for a minute. Take out the first soldier you see, but don't go any further. Head back to the bridge. The drake will probably take off and fly away by then, so you can safely go out and pillage the corpses nearby. One of them is the Claymore.
Why level Strenght for a weapon that has no strenght scaling anymore?
Uchigatana might be nice if you go for Dex? You have to kill that Undead Merchant in Undead Burg (just buy the items off him before you do it).
They're both weapons you get relatively early. Youi should really check out the wiki for the game probably.
There are no "good" dex weapons you can get easily and early on the game as a beginner besided the uchikatana, which requires you to kill the undead merchant which would make you unable to invade because you coul not get any llyods in the beginning which are pretty usefull in matches against estusholics. I don't rly like estoc and the balder swag sword is pretty rare. Sometimes you would need to farm hours to get it if unlucky. But if you really want the a dex weapon get the "Balder Side Sword" (Balder Swag Sword).
But also all start weapons are good (besides broken swords xD). The only thing is - Till you get to a blacksmith, all weapons are pretty weak if you are not already overlvled. Also DON'T take the drakesword, its a noobtrap. You can upgrade a weapon to +5 just 10 min play more in the game and its just not worth it. It doesn't scale and a good scaling +5 weapon is already stronger at a pretty low lvl.
If you are a Dex Build yes.. along the Standard path.. Up to +5 initially after you get the Large Ember to +10 and then very large Ember up to +15 with a Normal Slab so remember to keep one for it.
If your mainly an INT build with Dex you can do above so you have it for buffing with Crystal magic weapon (and power within on yourself .. With the Linguring dragon crest ring on). Or you could go down the Enchanted route where it will scale with INT and still a little with Dex for this you need to get it to +5 Magic then give Enchanted Ember to Rickettte of Vinhiem and he can then ascend it up the Enchanted path.. be aware that doing this will mean you wont be able to buff it with crystal magic weapon or resins etc.
If a Faith/ Dex build the other option is Divine or even Occult.. this is similar to the enchanted path but for Faith builds. Therefore it would scale with Faith and a little still with Dex... Andre of Astora in Undead Parish does these uprade paths and again it will be unbuffable with Darkmoon Blade and or Sunlight blade (Faith weapon buffs) and resins.
If you are a Str build then the Balder sword is not realy the best... The starting Clerics weapon the Mace is a good starting weapon for str builds and along with the Battle axe mentioned above. Claymore is good too and if you dont wish to risk the Drake... The Bastardsword (Child born out of wedlock sword if the daft buggers censor the name of an actual sword) could substitute till you do get it, bought from Andre.
Are you going for a strength build or dexterity? Are you interested in using weapon buffs (either sorceries, miracles, or items like gold pine resin) to apply extra damage potential to your weapon?
