Advice on what to level and is the Battle Axe overpowered?

I'm working on my 1st play through and have just defeated the Chaos Witch Quelagg. I'm level 43 with rough stats:
Vitality 20
Strength 23
Endurance 21
Dex 20
and all the other stats with 1-3 random points I put in early because I had no idea what I was doing.

So far I'm happy with the high str because it allows me to use the battle axe +10 which has allowed me to mow through most of hte game. I also like the dex at 20 because it allows me towield a long bow to pick off some enemies. I'm thinking about dumping the rest of my points into str, vitality and endurance only.

So far, I've only used the battle axe as my main weapon (got it as a drop very early in the game). I have tried great swords and katana's and just cannot figure out how to use them effectively. The battle axe works well for my block and counter playstyle.

Any advice since levels are getting quite expensive right now. My next step is to farm the forest for some XP and then attempt to refight the hydra with better weapons and specs.

You've got what's called a quality build where your stats are geared to equipping anything rather than min/maxing. Go 40/40/40 vit/end/str and maybe bump dex up to 25 for the last few dex weapons.

Battleaxe is okay. Not the best, but enough to carry you through NG if you really want. Maybe upgrade to the Black Knight Greataxe if you can get your hands on one.

I've not been able to get my hands on the Black Knight Greataxe. I have the Black Knight Greatsword but hate it. Too slow.

BK Greataxe is beast. But it's hard to come by (you have just 1 chance to get it as a drop until very late in the game) so the man-serpent greatsword is another great str weapon. And personally I love the battleaxe, it's a very good weapon for the first block of the game. With proper upgrades and using it 2-handed you can kill most things in 1-2 hits in the early areas.

I think the first time you can get BK Greataxe is in the Catacombs. Maybe try the Great Club, though.

If you want to aim the end game build, 40 dex and 28 strength, but I'd level strength up first.
Get Endurance to 40 if possible and health could really be anything you want.

This and you're on your way to a quality warrior build.
