Katanas and spears - pros and cons, which is one is the most reliable

So I made a new character lately and I wanted to make some good RPG element to keep me hooked to this game. I aim to make an Ornstein-like char (lightning bruiser, mobile hard hitter and stuff) but I want to spice things up a little bit for me. Now, for the weapon I decided to either focus on spears or katanas.

Any opnions as to which of the two is a solid choice for a fast, nimble style? and in choosing a category, what weapon would recommend to be the most reliable?

Katana is better DPS/damage per hit wise. Spears are very fast and while they don't hit as hard they have reach and penetrate heavy armor far better than the slashing attacks of katanas.

As far as katanas go they're all decent. I like the Iaito most for PvE, the chaos blade is great for PvP, uchi is basically a mirror of the iaito with different moves. Never used the washing pole but the extra weight and str requirement might be justified by the reach.

SK spear and Demon spear are my favorites for PvP due to reach. Winged spear has pretty good AR but it's a little shorter. Partizan seems alright apart from having unimpressive AR.

I see. well for now I am slowly upgrading my uchi but I am wondering if it's really the style I want. how about the dragonslayer spear? how good is it?

Just my opinion: Dragonslayer spear not worth. It weighs 10 units which is way more than is reasonable for a spear (that goes for the pike too). The dragonslayer spear also needs this odd high minimum str dex/faith build that isn't good for anything but the dragonslayer spear.

Demon's Spear has the highest AR but it's split between lightning and thrust. It won't do the most damage once enemies have decent lighting resist. The main adavantages of it are weight and reach.

Hmm... Okay. I am going to try and get the Iaito as soon as possible to compare the two. I am still starting out for my second char anyway (just finished ringing the first bell, hehe)

as for the spear, the SK spear has a divine effect right? does my currently low faith (planning to increase it soon) would affect its effectiveness?

No, SK spear is pure physical. You only need to level dex.

oh. Just checked the wiki for the stats of the dragonslayer. I am planning to increase my faith as well (until I can get the sunlight blade or something) but before then...

ah... well that's good then, right?

hmm... right, so far I am inclined towards the iaito/uchigatana (since their difference is mainly their moveset), the silver knight spear and the dragonslayer spear.

Yes, but it doesn't have split damage or scale to faith, which is what OP was asking about.
