I want ot use a greatsword.
I really like the idea of using a greatsword of some type, but I don't want to have a fat roll, so I'll probably use it, grass crest, and light armor. However, which great sword should I use, and what stats should I invest in to make the most of it?

if want a balanced greatsword that deals good damage, has great moveset, and relatively lightweight go for a claymore.

I don't know what I like, that's the problem. This is my first time playing. I just know I like greatswords I don't know what stats they require, although I'd guess trength, maybe dex? I also don't know how high I need to make those to use the weapon to the best. I don't know what modifiers like lightning or divine or whatever I shoukld put on it.

This is why I'm asking

Claymore is always a solid weapon; if you're looking for something huge try the Demon's Great Machete (not so useful in pvp but a super fun weapon to use). As far as stats go, look at the item description for whatever weapon you pick. It'll have letter grades indicating how well it scales with each stat (str, dex, int, fai). Generally greatswords scale well with str, with some weak scaling in dex.

Spam the Claymore, everyone does.

If you Want a Ultra Greatsword the Zweihander is a DS Community Favorite. Invest in STR and END.

You should only only put a modifier like Divine or Enchanted on a weapon if a) that weapon has low initial stat requirements and b) scales to stats that you don't intend to level up. Divine if you're going for a faith build, Enchanted if an intelligence build, and chaos/lightning if none of the above and just endurance and vitality. In all other circumstances, +15 regular is the way to go. As for greatswords, do you want an ult greatsword or just a greatsword? Curved greatsword? What's the deal here?

I really liked the look of the artorious swords, but apparently they're only worth it if you go to super high levels

This is true. They have requirements in all four scaling stats. If you're thinking a normal greatsword though, your options are the Black Knight Sword, Man-Serpent Greatsword, B astard Sword, Claymore, Flamberge, Obsidian Greatsword, and Artorias swords (Great Lord Greatsword too but you'll need NG+ for that). The BKS and MSG scale mostly to strength. The BKS has a pretty wonky moveset, while the MSG's is pretty good. The Claymore and B astard Sword are "quality" weapons, meaning they need investment in both str and dex, but they have pretty good movesets all around. The Flamberge has a very interesting moveset and scales primarily to dex. The Obsidian Greatsword has an AoE attack, but no scaling to any stat. You know about the Artorias swords (which also have wonky movesets), and the GLGS has high base damage, but mediocre scaling and a slightly wonky moveset. Of these, take your pick.

There are other Greatswords, the Stone Greatsword, Moonlight Greatsword, and Crystal Greatsword. The Stone Greatsword is mostly used for it's TWoP effect, and scales primarily to str and dex like the Claymore/B astard Sword but also to int. The MLGS scales only to int and has a great moveset, but is essentially for mage builds only. The Crystal Greatsword can't be upgraded and is basically just bad.

I have seen a lot of people suggesting the black knight gteatsword in forums and what not. It may be interesting just to see how it works, but I can't actually kill a black knight to get it yet ()Just got to undead parish, about to fight bell gargoyle)
