Leo Ring... How good is it at PVP?
I've been playing this game for a while now (I know I tend to put a bit of posts here and there) and just recently in my second char I was able to defeat the ever-lovable Ornstein and Smough with Ornstein being killed last. So with that I got his sweet spear and Leo Ring.

How... should I use this thing really? I've been reading about this in wikis on its effectiveness, especially on PVPs but I still for the life of me understand how is this effective in battle..

The ulterior reason I asked is because I am planning to get this ring for my 1st character (SL 130 quality build longsword wielder, doing NG+2)

thanks so much! :D

Leo ring works with baller swag sword,warpick,pickaxe,gr8sword(thrust attack on rolls),spears, thrusting swords, halberd
The problem is trying to get the counterhit damage. The timing can be hard to get when you first started to use the leo ring for the extra counter hit damage
Make sure that you have at least 56 poise to resist greatsword 2 handed r1.Sometimes you can oneshot people using the lucerne(or was it warpick with spinny r2) 2H r2 with 40/40 build, dealing 1000+ damage
Edit:Forgot to add lucerne

ahh... so that's how it works. so as long as the opponent's in their attack animation? hmm... and then no to little deflection on shields can also help in landing the counter?

but... how would I know if the shield will have a no, little, or heavy deflection (with the exception of greatshields, we know they are heavy deflections)

ah... poise... that's gonna be a problem for me then...

anyway, im gonna try to get my 1st char to anor londo to kill ornstein for the ring (NG+2 though so I dont know how I will kill that sucker).

and yeah, its hard to know if im getting a counter or not aside from checking the damage. is there a visual/audio cue or something for a counter?

I remember reading about how you can sometimes see orange/spark particle thingy when you successfully get a counter hit on enemies/players.Not sure if this is true

Well,if you did a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ more damage from your normal attacks(or AR),that means you got the counter hit bonus

Ayy.Talking bout leo ring,I'm planning on making a leo ring dedicated build
Let's see how much I suck at getting counter hits

If you could use it with a very heavy thrusting weapon like the greatsword it might be good. Honestly though, I don't see a situation in PvP where it's better than another ring.

if you can take advantage of it, and if your build doesn't require something like havels or wolf ring, and you don't want to (ab)use ninja ring, then Leo is a pretty clear choice imo.

I just can't think of a good application for it in PvP. On one hand you'll have the fast rolling character using it with Wolf. The problem I see there is that you're likely to take a hit yourself when landing a counter. Since you have no equip weight up your defense is likely to be fairly low and the trade may not even favor you (think about the fact that you can't FaP). In that situation, hornet and chloranthy look as good to me (in addition to the derpwoodgrain ring). The other situation is for a mid or fat-roll character. I've actually used this on my silver knight darkwraith when I swap from sword to spear and noticed it works well. That being said, it's mid-roll and isn't tough to exploit.
Reoden Oct 13, 2015 @ 10:15am
I've never made a mid/fat roll char for PvP, nor do I consider them anything other than troll builds or just inept (obviously fat roll more so but I don't see any reason to not aim for fast roll). But not every build has to be 40/40 quality. You can make a 125 that has like 60 or 70something endurance and uses elemental weapons, easily have enough poise to tank most weapons, and still have fast roll, and use something like a BSS to take advantage of the Leo ring. Some people also go no poise. You can also take favorable trades if you're good at spacing, using a spear would obviously help with that. You can also turtle poke behind a shield, etc.

Though I personally consider ninja and hornet rings cancerous so I never use them. Anyway I'm not saying it's the best ring in the game or anything like that, just saying it's easily viable.

I thought about using elemental weapons but I don't think elemental damage is multiplied by Leo, just the base physical since that's all that counts as thrust (afaik).

hmm.. you may be right, I'm not sure myself, haven't really tested that. But even if that is the case, plenty of builds use non-elemental weapons and can take advantage of a Leo ring.

The thing about the leo ring is that people will be more likely to trade hits with you since they have no ways of knowing you're going leo ring. You can bait them into detrimental trades this way. I've been on both the inflicting and receiving end of devastating trades that change the whole complexion of the fight. 700 damage from a non-crit is no joke.
