The biggest problem with DS1 is that is crappy port.
- Better balanced gameplay
- Less cheap deaths
- Better atmosphere
- Better hitboxes (also related to less cheap death)
- Better overall experience
cons for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition:
- Needs community patches to work 100% (even if they're easy to use)
- Has online matchmaking issues
pros for Dark Souls II
- Incredible matchmaking/co-op experience
cons for Dark Souls II
- More cheap deaths
- Unrelieable hitboxes
- Terribly unbalanced PvP (both in regards to weapons and basic matchmaking mechanics)
Dark souls 1 is good to get you adjusted to games like this, the co-op, the pvp, and the mechanics of how you play it.
Dark souls 2 is harder to get items, more people that use cheap and annoying ways to kill you, more quality builds to obliterrate you. And the game's enemies are also harder, less reaction time, you get stunned for longer, but dark souls 2 also looks better, its more like demons souls than dark souls 1 is, and its all in all about the same amount of enjoyment for me as I had in dark souls 1 :D.
Your choice man, your choice
It is an absolute mess of a port. Online is dead empty because LIVE is a horrible framework. People go through countless hoops to get the game to work, and even then it is not guaranteed your game is going to work.
Get Dark Souls 2. A lot more players online, and a much more stable experience.
Well, i wonder why i haven't finished ds2 yet if its a better experience? I am not motivated to play it. And, well.... I guess you play ds2 on pc with a controller, right? It has even worse issues with the mouse + keyboard than ds1. It still needs a "fix". The mouse has a somewhat lag imput and you need a "community fix" or some own idea to fix it.
DS2 online experience is... well.. yeah. I got invaded once. And got a spell in my face and died. There is more coop, but the bosses are mostly so easy, that coop is not needed at all. All have like the same attacks. Meeleswing, meelesmash and explosion. Somewhat like nito and 4kings do in ds1. But the hitboxes are way bigger and strange.
Maybe i'll finish ds2 if i am motivated to play it again, but i still want to do darklurker as i have heard its the "best" boss in the game. But as far as i can say now: ds1 is way better than ds2.
With the community fixes ds1 is very enjoyable. You just need to know how to configure them right. In the forum you'll always find some coop, also me included. I help out new people at ds1. My supported range is from lvl 18 to lvl 120.

The game still has a hefty following :)
Really? I know some people experience issues, but I've installed DS1 on two computers and didn't have any problems with installation or GfWL. DSfix isn't required, but it's so simple to set up. Besides, quite a few PC games have mods and community fixes. It is what makes PC the superior platform for gaming.
The world in DS II feels disconnected, you can see some other areas but when u reach them its all wrong from where u saw them, displaced, confusing. the story in DS II is more complex than in I but its also more direct in aproach and it restricts you more.
My advice is. Play DS II first. since i think having played the better game DS I first has ruined a good part of DS II for me.
tho i think playing it first wont give you the expactations DaS had given me and might give you a better experience overall.
