Drake can be another word for dragon, but in this game they're different...
drake: spits lightning, specifically found in Valley of drakes (doh).
dragon: spits fire/poison/crystal (undead and seath), much bigger than a human.
wyvern: some ppl call dragons wyverns (ie. hellkite wyvern).
A wyvern is not a dragon --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyvern
In the DkS universe Dragon is specifically those that were immortal like the Greys or Seath they have 6 limbs, 4 legs and 2 wings and are sentient most of the time.
Drake refers to 4 limed, 2 legged and 2 winged sub-group of those dragons which aren't immortal and are pretty dumb they are also much smaller then Dragons and larger then Wyvern.
You are right a wyvern only has 2 legs and wings. They aren't juvenile Drakes they are just smaller. Think house cat vs lion
Yeah the community calls him "dragon" since most people when they first meet him go "oh f*#$ a dragon" so it kinda stuck since who's going to argue in the middle of getting roasted alive.
Try explaining the ins and outs of drakes and dragons to a new guy when they reach that bridge.
Dragon reffers exclusibly to the ancient dragons, the inmortal ones that existed in the age of ancients. they all have, at the very least, 6 limbs (seath had 8 without counting the tail)
Drakes are imitations of those ancient dragons. usually made by artificial means. for example, the drakes in dark souls 2 were made by Aldia. And, while this is just expeculation, I like to think that both the drakes in dark souls 1 and 3 were people who underwent the path of the dragon, and over time turned into drakes. In fact, it is belived that Ornstein turned into the drake that the Nameless king is riding.
Wyvern is probably just another form to call the drakes, probably used to describe elder drakes, since the wyverns in dark souls 3 look pretty old.
the only exception to all of this is the ancient dragon of dark souls 2. while it is artificially made, using the soul of a giant, it's almost like a true ancient dragon, wich is why it has 6 limbs and a more robust body than most drakes.
Also, no one cares.
Remember that Seath and Gwyndolin are MAJOR characters in terms of the setting, enemies, and overall lore of the game. Seath had created several different creatures and Gwyndolin employed them in several different important locations.
Valley of the Drakes is the divide between Darkroot Basin(governed by moonlight), Blighttown and therefore all of the Demon Ruins, and the lost city of New Londo. Remember that after the Age of Ancients, the great Lords split up. The Demons went to war with Gwyn's army of Black Knights, but before the outcome could be decisive, Gwyn parted to link the flame. Before doing so, he entrusted Gwyndolin with the safeguarding of his "tomb" and Anor Londo.
Gwyndolin is the origin of the sunlight in Anor Londo - projected through the illusion of a "sun princess", as his own projection in truth is the moonlight. The two parts of the game where you can clearly see the Moon are Darkroot and Dark Anor Londo. The reason the DLC is based upon Darkroot is so that you can figure out why a god and his Knights have a presence there. They are safeguarding and containing the power of the Abyss that took Artorias and crippled Oolacile. Gwyndolin acknowledges that the three knights who were present there had great power, and feared that hollows would come to take that power.
Note that Forest invaders and Gravelord spirits of vengeance are blue, along with the Darkmoon covenant. Velka, the goddess of sin, had once and is presently waging a war against the gods, and the covenant that Gwyndolin controls was once hers. She created the power to invade the offenders of the gods, which Gwyndolin usurped and altered for his own purpose. Invading humans in the Forest, invading servants of Nito, and invading anyone who conspires against him is to turn a blind eye to the truth about "sin" and "dark".
Anyway, note that the Hydra is in both the Darkroot Basin and in Ash Lake. The Hydra shows no affiliation to the Everlasting Dragon, as E.D. is passive and friendly while the Hydra is not. The Hydra actively tries to prevent you from reaching two key locations: The hiding spot of E.D. and the portal to Oolacile(and Dusk, who was transformed by Seath into a golem). I theorize that the Hydra was put in Darkroot Basin partially because the DLC was pre-planned. This shows us that the Hydra is most likely a creation of Seath or Gwyndolin using pillaged Dragon Scales as a source of their power. Why else would a Dragon Scale drop from something that is not a Dragon?
In the grand scheme of things, very little of what you do in Dark Souls 1 is genuine until you reach Anor Londo, at which point you may choose your path. That was anticipated by Gwyndolin, which is why he makes every effort to keep you from the truth, and his greatest foes. So in short, the Drakes and Wyvern you encounter are part of that effort.
To become a temporary Dragon Newt is the height of the evolution a human seems to take in walking the Path of the Dragon. It is not an internal change of being, but rather a change in physical form granted by a magical stone. The evolution would be dictated by that stone, which never changes. To walk the Path of the Dragon is to stand against all of the lords, the gods, and humanity in general. Velka makes no attempts to prevent you from this, as your ultimate fate is sealed one way or another. The more power the Chosen Undead can accrue, the greater the chances that Gwyndolin will be defeated by them.
