[FOUND FIX] Dark Souls Crashing at PC Settings and new game
**UPDATE**

So after messing around for a bit I found a fix for this issue. You WILL be able to play on the monitor that was not initially working. The only problem is that after performing the fix, you will not be able to access the "PC Settings" section of the menu (Also possibly not be able to create a new character; have not tested this yet) Unless you plug back in to an external monitor.

The Fix

You will have to connect your laptop to an external monitor, and then disable your laptop's monitor. Run Dark Souls, and then access the "PC Settings" menu. Change the settings to full screen, 1920x1080, and disable anti-aliasing. Save the settings and exit to the main menu. Start a new game and create your character, and at least get to the playable part after the intro. Save and quit (make as many characters as you think you will need in the future to make things easier for yourself). Now, this next step may not be necessary, but I did it regardless. Download DSfix, open the .ini and unlock the FPS (and change the settings to your liking). Also double check and make sure your laptop is set to 60hz.

Now disconnect the external monitor and switch back to your laptop's monitor and run Dark Souls. Choose load game, choose the character you just made, and it should work! This is also where you will not be able to access the "PC Settings" menu anymore (and possibly New Character).

Downloading DSfix may be an unnecessary step but I don't want to go through this again to find out (also I don't think anyone plays without it anyway).

Hope this helps someone else!

Original Text

Hi There. When I try to go into settings or new game it crashes and gives me the message: ""DARK SOULS PREPARE TO DIE EDITION executable has stopped working".

I have already checked several other threads for solutions. My monitor is native 75hz, so i tried setting it to 60hz. Didn't work. Tried rolling back my nvidia drivers but that just took me to integrated Microsoft graphics from 2006 (I assume because it's a brand new computer it had nothing to roll back to). That didn't work either. Also tried installing DSfix. Nope. Tried running it in Compatibility Mode for both Windows 7 and 8. Nuh-uh. One weird thing I noticed is that if I go directly into the DATA file and try running the .exe (even as administrator) it won't start. Tried the compatibility troubleshooter as well and when it gave me the option for a test run, it wouldn't start there either.

This is my favorite game of all time guys please save me
Thanks for any help

The computer I'm using for reference: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232863

My game has never run from the exe directly. I never understood it either, but never had an issue.

you have w10-

navigate to:

C:\Users\Your user name\AppData\Local\NBGI\DarkSouls

There is an INI file you can open with notepad, and you can edit settings in there. You can change the frequency to 75hz.

Also, you should be using the nvidia drivers for your GPU, I would veer away from M$ selected drivers.

If you use DSfix, make sure you have disabled in game AA.

hopefully this is some help.

check the section about your issue, i don't like spamming my own stuff but listing all the solutions takes too long and i don't have enough t1m3

Having exactly the same issue here, i'd love to play this game but it also crashes on PC Settings and New Game options. I'm using an ASUS Rog Laptop with GTX 970M.
btw OP, since it seems, by what you've written, that you've already played the game, you can still use the old savefile no matter what, since loading game and stuff is fine

Unfortunately changing the refresh rate in the .ini file didn't fix the problem. I tried matching the monitor refresh rate and the .ini refresh rate at both 60 and 75.

Solution 1: I searched my files for lightboost, don't have it

Solution 2: Haven't tried it but it will be my last resort if all else fails (except this will only be a temporary fix for me because coming soon I'm moving and won't have access to an external monitor).

Solution 3: Changed the Windows display settings along with the NVidia settings to both match at 60hz but didn't work.

Solution 4: I tried manually changing the game's refresh rate to match the monitor's refresh rate at both 60hz and 75 hz, but didn't work.

Solution 5: As stated before I already tried this.

Problems like this are the worst because it basically came with the computer, considering it's brand new. So there's nothing I could have altered in the computer to cause the problem :(

Thank you trying, that was a really nice guide

Edited because it quoted the wrong name

I'm getting the same thing, on a new Aorus X7 Pro Sync, with sli 970m. Tried making a custom resolution within NVidia cp, with 60hz refresh. Surprised that didn't work.

Isn't it frustrating? The world's best game is unplayable and seems to have no fix...

I've really had an urge to play lately but this pops up and it really sucks
