Do people still play in 2023?
I thought the death knell to this version was the developer patching out DSfix, and not fixing anything that DSfix patched?
Which is better this version or DSR? DSR seems like a gigantic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and for some reason I have a data fraud claim placed on my account on that version.
It seems like you can play online on this version, but do you need dumpster-fire GFWL like the old days?
I'm still trying to figure out which version to play, and which to download daughters of ash on. Let me know what you think.

DSFix was never patched into the game to begin with and this version had never been officially fixed in any way. Online connectivity got even worse after the removal of GFWL, hence why there's another major mod, that fixes that too, called DSCM.
All FromSoft did recently was disable online matchmaking completely for this version. This version also remains the only soulsgame, which did not fix the critical RCE-vulnerability in it's netcode, which could allow co-op players or invaders to potentially get control of your computer.

The workaround to get this game online does not require GFWL, just a simple text-file edit and the latest version of the Dark Soul Connectivity Mod (or DSCM for short), which also claimed to have fixed the RCE-vulnerability. But only few people still play and even fewer with this mod running, so it's very unlikely, that you will bump into a random player at any point during your playthorugh.

This means, that you either modded the game in some way or at some point a cheater invaded you and gave you impossible items/stats to get you softbanned. Either way, you can make a fresh save on a family-shared alt-account to dodge softbans in soulsgames, hence why they are still so cheater infested (softbans can also go away after a while or after removing "invalid data" i.e. mods or impossible items). Every soulsgame after this one has a pretty useless softban-system, hence why modding isn't as straightfoward.

There are still people playing, it's been hovering around 250 to 300 players daily from what I recall.

The best version is the PtDE with DSFix and DXVK.

In case of DS1 PtDE: DX9 to Vulkan. Much better and stable performance. No stuttering, higher fps, etc.
