how important are titanite shards?

I have 6 of them on me and can't beat capra demon. I was planning to spend them on some super awesome katana I hope to stumble upon. But now I'm not sure. Will it be a waste if I dump them all in a longsword? Should I grit my teeth and keep saving them up for a better weapon?

They become very trivial to obtain. 800 souls each from the blacksmith, it only takes about 8-9 to upgrade a weapon to +5. After +5 you need larger ones.

Upgrade whatever you're using now. Tip: unequip your armor for the fight, except your helmet. Become fast and roll around the big swings!

also if you stay close to the fog gate you'll only agro one of the dogs for the whole fight.

You need 9 Titanite Anything for one single Update path. So from 0 to +5 9, from 6 to 10 9, and from 11 to 15 8, with one special one. You can feel free to just use em on any weapon you fancy atm, the only difference is the special one for the normal titanite, as that one can only be gotten very rarely.

Wow, with longsword +4 stuff actually dies when I hit it. Slashing through the undead assassins is a boring cakewalk now. Wish I did it sooner.

Killed the demon. Thanks for the reassurance Wuff Hunter. Would have kept spending hours on neverending suffering till I quit, if I didn't let go of greed.

Well, you should be able to easily use your longsword for quite a bit now. You should always strife to keep your weapon as highly upgraded as possible.

There are many better weapons you will happen upon.

"better weapon" is MOSTLY subjective.
Most melee weapons can be good, and it's more about what you find Comfortable.

Exceptions are there...Like Drake Sword, Whips, and Fist weapons, but pretty much all Straight Swords are good, all Great Swords are good, etc.

As far as Titanite goes....Don't worry about Titanite Shards, or Large Titanite Shards, these are sold infinitely by merchants. So upgrade what you're using now, and just buy more later if you switch weapons.

Titanite Chunks will require actual Mob Farming later if you want to upgrade more weapons.
