Doing 10 damage to skeletons?

I got this game after playing through DS3 about 4 times, started as Pyromancer and got through the asylum just fine. I am now right outside firelink shrine just getting demolished by skeletons. Alone they take probably a full minute to kill, but then there's always 2 of them.

I have the Hand Axe and was wondering if it is normal to be doing 10 damage to these enemies? My only other option is the slower morning star I found which does 3 more damage or a Zweihander I can't use properly.

Is this game just insanely more difficult than DS3? Thanks.

It's the only way I found. Going towards the catacombs. I only know the catacombs are there because I tried running through, which doesn't really work since the catacombs is filled with skellymans too.

You could consider talking to the NPCs in the area. One of them straight up tells you where to go if you pay attention.

I do recall the dude telling me I could go up or down. I suppose I conveniently found the "down" route which is not the one you're "supposed" to do first. I explored the Firelink Shrine and found the hidden area with chests all over and from there it leads to the graveyard, so I didn't really find the mountain path. I did now, though, and thanks for being vague so I still had to look myself.

You found the newbie trap. We all went there. But if you want a good tips, the boss of the catacombs is the hardest of the series. It's like nameless king on steroid.
