Equipment load...
Is it less severe in the other dark souls games?
I have the armour I got at the start of the game (hard leather?) a small metal shield and a halberd, I can't equip anything else without fat rolling no matter how many points i try to raise it by.

You could try wearing havels ring/FaP ring, they both boost equip load. The only other way is to level up endurance.

The next games only have 1 threshold (70% equip load) beyond which you get fatroll, if you stay below that you fastroll but the more you approach that 70% the shorter the roling distance, and stamina recovery of course.
