Why do you need a ring to enter the Abyss? [Spoilers]
The Artorias of the Abyss DLC makes it clear that as a human you can enter the Abyss and not be harmed. I know that it is a chasm being corrupted by the Abyss and not the Abyss proper, but as a human the dark shouldn't hurt you, or at least not effect you in the same way it effected Artorias.

Also where did the Covenant of Artorias ring come from and how does it work anyway? It's entirely based on a story that never happened. Did Elizabeth make it somehow?

I think Manus-Abyss and Four Kings-Abyss are two different things.

Manus-Abyss is a result of humanity-sorcery while Four Kings-Abyss is result of Lifedrain-corruption.

Least thats how i understand it.

Artorias, in order to hunt Darkwraiths (servants of the Dark,) had entered a covenant with an unnamed creature from the Abyss, and received a ring that would allow him to traverse the Abyss unharmed.

This is correct.

Also worth to mention: Darkstalker Kaathe is the reason for Oolaciles and New Londo's destruction.

Is that the ring's description?

Problem with that is Artorias can't and did not traverse the Abyss unharmed. So what part of it is actually true?

Yes he did, in New londo. At the time it was flooded, he returned to Anor Londo. He didnt fall for the dark here. It is unclear if he was defeated by manus and or just fell to the dark in the Abyss of Oolacile.

I was under the impression all the New Londo stuff happened after the DLC story.

As far as i know , the fall of New londo is unknown, however, artorias entered the Abyss before the events in Oolacile happened / or at the same time according to several ds lore sites.

But is that just referring to him going into the Chasm to stop Manus and getting corrupted before you get there?

I think not - "our" new londo stuff is present but DLC is past and Artorias in bloom even more so

Artorias was present during the fall of New Londo. The home of the Darkwraiths, the Abyss, can only be traversed by the creatures of the Dark. To be able to destroy it from the inside, Artorias made a covenant with the creatures of the Abyss, symbolized by a ring. But in doing so, his greatsword became cursed. In recognition of his actions in the New Londo crisis, he gains the moniker "The Abysswalker" and awarded one of Anor Londo's treasures, a blessed pendant that allowed him to repel the Dark of the Abyss.

When Oolacile w👁ke Manus, Manus' influence corrupted the citizens of Oolacile against their will and made them the forces of the Abyss. Artorias, accompanied by Sif, arrived there to save Oolacile as well as Princess Dusk, who was captured from the present day. However, the two were overrun by the creatures of the Abyss. Artorias sacrificed himself to protect Sif using his greatshield to raise a barrier around the wolf pup. Defeated by the Abyss, the knight became corrupted against his will. His already-cursed sword became corrupted by the Abyss as well. But even with one arm broken, Artorias is still a formidable swordsman (some of his technique is later used by Sif in Sif's boss fight), as you will find later when you fight him before entering Oolacile Township.

Is actually one of the best descriptions and make pretty much sense.

Who gave him the ring is not so clear, however, many people guess its from kaathe.

From the boss arena itself, you can see the difference.Manus's 'abyss' still has a floor while Four Kings' abyss is pure abyss without anything in it.
From what I understand, the ring just allows you to traverse the abyss as in walking on it
