Is kindling worth it?
I'm new to this game, and I'm not really sure how many humanity items/stats I should have as a reserve. Should I kindle a bonfire if I'm having trouble, or do I need to save all the humanity I can get for something later on? I'm not really sure how common it will be.

If it helps, I'm at the lower undead burg with about 12 points worth of humanity in items. Thank you.

It is when you are new to the game and you will be able to farm humanity later on in the game if you need it. You might try just kindling bonefires you have problems around ... and before finishing the game you can decide to go back and kindle them further because they will be kindled for your NG+ etc.

It's good to stay at 10 active humanity 'cuz you get the most dmg out of chaos weapons and most item find. More than 10 active humanity is not necessary.

Kindling is aaabsoluuutely worth it. Going from 5 estus flasks to 10 can make or break it in some areas, especially if you're new to the souls series.

Later in the game, Humanity isn't that rare to find. There are places where you can farm it, and all bosses drop twin humanities. But early in the game, you'll want to be selective about which bonfires you kindle. Generally early in the game, you'll want to save the humanity items and only use the humanity that you've directly accumulated. But don't stick to that too strictly. The first thing you need to know about a Souls game is that there is no "right" way to play. Do what you have to in order to survive and progress. And have fun.

I think if you have active humanity use it anytime you want, you'll loose them if you die twice, so it's the best option.
Also, if you feel like needing more estus yes, upgrade the bonefire, you'll always have the chance to get more humanity and the're almost only to upgrade bonefires and summon people.

A more "advanced" tip is to have some on hand to use in boss battles, as they function as the Estus does, but gives way more health per use. Great as a sort of desperate backup plan when Estus should run out, you have no healing miracles but a few humanity handy.

Only you then add the humanity to the counter you loose when you die (and completely if you die again before reaching your death point), of course, so add that to the consideration.

It's absolutly worth it, especially if you have soft humanity to spare, whice you lose on death. Also, be sure to kill Pinwheel, he gives you the "Rite of Kindling" which allows you to kindle bonfires 2 more times, up to 20 estus, which is amazing.
