Paladin Leeroy Invasion prior to Lordvessel?

Can Leeroy still invade if you have not aquired the lordvessel? I am asking because I have a purist faith build in mind that requires the Sanctus, which I would like to get early along with Replenishment and the Server (you can see where I am going with this build).

I don't think he invades you if the golden fog gate is still there... I think you need to cross it to actually trigger the invasion... ???

That's 100% correct, Leroy can't invade until the lordvessel is placed in the Kiln.

you don't have to "cross" the yellow fog, in fact he invades you before that point, when you step into the illuminated part of the path, a few steps after the ladder.
I have no idea whether you need to have placed the lordvessel or not, though.
