Do you have to have the white sign soapstone in order to see summon signs?

My friend is new and I want to help him with Burg, but he isn't able to see my sign. We are connected through DSCM, we are both human, and within the level range for co-op. Plz halp

Remember you can only conduct summons if the boss of the area is still alive, and even then not all areas are available for coop, make sure that you actually can summon in the area you guys are playing in.

1: area boss needs to be alive
2: area needs to be available for summoning(not valley of drakes)
3: level restrictions, level +/- (10+10%), a level 20 can't summon a pyromancer starter.
If all those are met, place sign, and wait up to 1 minute for the sign to appear. The game sends the connection request(summon sign) out every 5-10 seconds or so, so if it doesn't appear right away, just wait. I'll show up eventually.

A friend and I had a connection through DSCM back when it was just starting to be a thing, and it took anywhere from 5 seconds, to 1 minute for my sign to show up for him, and there were LITERALLY no other nodes we were connected to.
