A question about parrying and poise
Is your ability to parry an attack having anything to do with the stability of your shield?

Does more poise reduce the ammount of time you're stunned gradually or are there static levels (like the encumberance) meaning for instance: 12 poise will prevent you from being stunned at all from a shortsword attack but with only 11 poise you'll be stunned like you had 0 poise.

Nope. Stability affects only the amount of stamina consumed when blocking. Certain small shields (Buckler & Target Shield for example, or the parrying dagger) have larger parry windows, which can make it easier.

^But they pay with that 2 additional frames with bigger recovery time (before you can do anything with shield again) so small shields + heater shield are the best for parrying.

I think stability effects how much stamina is expended when you get a partial parry. I'm not positive about that though. Your ability to parry attacks is just based on timing, you can even do it with your fist if you want to.

Stability affect stamina dmg after blocking hit, low stability will deplete your stamina very fast.

Yeah, you do understand what I mean by partial parry though, right? When your parry is slightly off you don't take the full damage of a hit and your stamina drops as if you partially blocked the attack.

I didn't mention partial parry because I couldn't find any data that would relate stability with partial parry.
Bones Aug 31, 2014 @ 12:47pm
Yeah it's not fit to an equation yet. If I could procure some numbers I'd be able to try but... meh.

So partially parrying, does that drain as much stamina as blocking the attack+stamina depleted from performing the parrying action or does it drain more stamina than that?
Also, how much health damage would that do? Half the damage the attack would do without blocking at all?

Interesting. Looked this up in the wiki:

http://darksouls.wikidot.com/parry#toc3

Partial Parry

When you parry a little too early (i.e. already entered recovery frame) or trying to parry an unparriable attack, you will do a "partial parry". You don't actually parry the attack (no parry SFX), and you don't technically block the attack either (no deflection), but it has several properties:
  • You still take damage, but the damage is partial. The damage taken is calculated from your weapon's actual blocking abilities divided by 2 (e.g. a partial parry by a Target Shield will give you 39% physical damage reduction instead of the normal 78%).
  • You don't suffer any kind of block stun, hit stun, or Poise damage.
  • You can do this to almost all kinds of attack in the game, including projectile attacks. The only exception is grab attacks; you must dodge those.

Not sure about the stamina loss though.

Partiall parry does block half of normal dmg reduction and takes the same stamina as parry but you don't suffer any poise dmg or stun.

Right, thank you for your comments. I've edited the OP with another question regarding poise.

Having your poise broken leads to a stun. http://darksouls.wikidot.com/poise

Having your stamina depleted leads to a stagger. http://darksouls.wikidot.com/stagger

Description

Stagger is a state where your character (or the enemy) is reeling backwards and the character can do nothing in that time. Stagger is different from a Poise break, characters in staggered state take extra damage and stagger has longer duration than a Poise break.

Damage

A staggered character takes 40% extra damage from everything, including spells (Pyromancies, Sorceries, and Miracles). Hitting a staggered character produces a green hit flash instead of the usual white.

Cause

There are many ways a character can become staggered:
  • A blocking character is drained of their Stamina
  • An attacking character is being deflected
  • An attacking character hits a wall
  • An attacking character is being parried
  • A character is getting kicked
  • An enemy has fallen on the character (can be prevented if the character is blocking)

I don't think that more/less poise changes the duration of a poise break stun. (don't quote me on that, I could be wrong)

Though, staggers can vary in duration. For example, the length of stagger animation is longer when using a thrusting weapon against a shield and being deflected, versus having another type of weapon deflected.

Anyone interested in the game mechanics should read through the articles here:

http://darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/poise there are min. values to not get stunned, 1 poise less than it's written and attack will stun you like you didn't have poise at all.

Man, fextralife has crappy writers. They're just sloppy. Is English their first language? I wouldn't think so..
