take a few steps back, press B and roll straight forward.

There are no diagonal rolls in DS1, you can only roll forward/backward/left/right, trying to do a diagonal roll (i.e. forward+left) will only pick a random direction.

Also, if you're standing still, the roll will become a backstep. If you're sprinting, the roll will become a jump that is probably going to get you counter-attacked, but you can still roll while sprinting if you hold the shield button.
