Want to play online? Try this.
Who knows when they're gonna fix the rce stuff but in the meanwhile, there is a way to be able to play online with this version of the game. It has been mentioned in some threads here and there but nobody has made like a tutorial or thread talking more in detail about it. Not that it's something difficult to put together that it needs a tutorial to begin with, but I thought I might as well post it if somebody might be interested.
Just a couple of things to consider: 1-Use DSCM, the newest versions are way better so I suggest update iit when you can. 2-You can only play online with players that have changed their game configuration which I'm gonna explain further, so for example if you want to play coop with a friend, both of you have to do this in order to be able to play online together. 3-The game might create a new save file located in C:\Users\*your user name*\Documents\NGBI\DarkSouls. In my case, the save file that normally loads is located inside a folder that has my old GFWL user name under the DarkSouls folder. If this your case, I suggest moving your save file and put it directly inside the DarkSouls folder in order to be able to use your current characters.
So with that out of the way, here are the steps:

1-install the game.
2-install dsfix.
3-run the game and close it afterwards.
4-go to the game's directory, a text file named "steam_appid" should be there.
5-open it with notebook, it should display a random number, erase it and type instead "480" (without the quotes!) save and close.
6-open DSCM and, very important, run the game using the dark souls exe on the game's directory, don't run the game via steam or another shortcut, it might not work.

You're done, DSCM should display players now.

If you want to add something or have any doubts, feel free to post them in the replies. Thanks for reading and have fun.

Sure, people are aware of the RCE thing, just let them try after everyone was talking about the exploit smh

Not a good idea

Oh yeah, forgot to add that it may be risky to use this because you could be attacked by some epic hax0r out there? I think that's highly unlikely to happen though. Nobody gives a shet about this version anymore.

only 4 people know how to execute the rce 2 out of that are blue sentinel devs

its also on consoles btw and they didnt took console servers down so cant be that bad (i know there are less personal infos on console then on pc but still if its that bad the console servers would be down too)
The exploit has been in the game since always, the problem is, everyone talked about it, most people didn't even know that such thing could be done, people made the dark souls exploit a big deal. So people with bad intentions could just learn/try to do the exploit just because they suddenly knew about it. Who knows if people are messing with the game's files and stuff just to learn how to do that, probably more than 4 people now know how to do the exploit because of everyone talking about the rce exploit.

Who was talking about it and where? I literally heard about it few days ago before servers shut down and I was a part of DS community for years. And the nonsense about 4 people knowing about this is quite absurd.

>playing ds
= being part of the ds community?
just go to the blue sentinel devs/blue acolyte and other modders
rce is just one of many
they were in the game for years nobody cared
its just the panic culture at work

True. The thing is though, I thought that at this point there would be some testimony out there of people that were attacked by someone using this thing (more specifically talking about people that have played PTDE using this spacewar stuff), or maybe find someone myself... but nope. Nothing at all. That inclines me to believe that if there's some sped out there actually planning to use this rce crap on someone else, is only through ds3 or the upcoming endel ring (not that it actually is going to be possible after the devs patch that crap out... fingers cross that they make a good job). But yeah... as Dekardi said in their post, a lot of panic was created about this. It's whatever at the end of the day though, the servers will be back soon so let's hope everything is solved by then.

This works great! A couple problems I had to solve:

-I had no steam_appid file. I just had to go into my DATA folder and create steam_appid.txt

-After doing that, the game would launch from the executable but the controller wouldn't work. That's cause steam detects the game as spacewar and messes with the configuration. I had to:

"Go to Big Picture Mode > Library > Choose the game > Manage Game > Controller Options > Under the "Use Steam Configuration..." choose "Forced Off" then OK."

(thanks, random comment).
BUT instead of choosing Dark Souls choose Spacewar, since that's the game steam thinks you're playing.

Now go pvp in lordran!

Hey, thank you for contributing to the thread. Since I've been playing using mouse and keyboard, I didn't knew there were issues with controllers.

I specify that you have to open the steam_api text file, not the dll one.

Yeah, it wasn't there for me ether. Aside from doing what sneezycat said, is that suppose to be in there?

Nevermind, I got it working. Had to run it thru powershell.

Hi, when I start dark souls with the PS4 controller it gives me some camera problems. How did you make it work?
