Character dies when dropping into the Abyss to fight the Four Kings WITH THE COA RING ON
I was using the Grass Crest Shield at the time but if I drop into the Abyss with the Covenant of Artorias ring ON and with a normal shield (no buff) I'm fine. Why is this happening? It's happened before too. All I have installed for Dark Souls 1 is DSCM and dsfix.

You have to keep the ring on while in the Abyss until the Four Kings are dead. I saw a guy on YouTube wearing the same shield and the ring and he proceeded to the fight as normal. Maybe the mods are bugged?

I believe it has something to do with frame rates and dsfix. But Im not sure. Happened to me too. Try 30 fps.

The person above is right, the frames are to blame. Same can happen in the Ringed City in DS3 when you drop down from high places, due to shítty framerate you can die from falling damage even tough you should not take any, same goes for the ring I guess, the abyss kills you a frame before the game checks if you are wearing the ring or not.

If you are using DSFix uncapped framerate, set it to 59 max. That MAGICALLY fixes most of the issues. The game breaks only once you reach 60fps+

I want to say this is completely false, as I tried testing 35, 50, 55, and 59 fps to see if anything breaks. If I recall correctly stuff still brakes, but I would be willing to test everything out again to be 100% sure.

I'd like to believe that even unlocking the code for slightly higher frames will still mess stuff up.

Edit: Here are the quick results so far. Stuff apparently breaks between 35 - 40 fps.

60 fps - breaks ladder
59 fps - breaks ladder
50 fps - breaks ladder
40 fps - breaks ladder
35 fps - works
31 fps - works
30 fps - works

Edit 2: Anything higher than unlocked 35 fps breaks ladder collision.

Edit 3: R'hllor, do you have unlocked frames on? (set to 1) I have fought Four Kings with CoA ring and stam shield and have never died by dropping down to the boss arena. :/

That's weird, as this is the same thing I tested, the ladder, and it works at 59 fps but not at 60....

Sounds like a known bug.
If you have too much effects on yourself some of them starting to override others.

Thanks. I'll try that next time I fight them because last night after I made this post I just swapped to my greatshield and beat them like that (which I didn't need actually, lol). Thank you to everyone else who posted too!

Yeah I figured that's the problem. It is a bug but it also makes sense imo. You can't cast spell buffs (like the miracle Replenishment) when you have a Transient Curse active (and vice versa) so I think a shield like the Grass Crest Shield canceling out the Covenant of Artorias effect would make sense if it were something that was actually a part of the game. Also being able to equip the Grass Crest Shield further motivates some people to just poise tank the Four Kings, lol. I'm pretty sure i've beaten the Four Kings before with light armor and fast rolling but usually I just poise tank them to be sure that I beat them. The lack of depth perception in the abyss when fighting them makes dodging their attacks (physical and magic attacks) a little tricky imo. Poise tanking them isn't TOTALLY mindless though. You can still be tactical with where you position yourself to avoid their physical attacks but you'll get hit sooner or later.

I wish this boss didn't had such a weird-designed attack while he's throwing a dark projectile onto you.

I do but to be honest i'm not sure why I did it. The thing is my laptop is a bit underpowered so I have trouble getting even 30 fps. I'll disable it and see if that prevents the bug/glitch happening with the grass crest shield and COA ring with a new character when I fight the Four Kings. By the way I HAVE fallen through the world when sliding a ladder with LESS THAN 30 fps. I usually only get around 15-20fps. I will be getting a new laptop sometime soon but I've been having to use a lot of my money for other stuff.

Same here! The attack with the multiple homing magic missiles sucks but that large dark projectile is so hard to read imo.

I don't think I saw it when I fought them last night so I actually look up this video to remind myself what it looked liked (it's at 00:50 in the video).

I just ran Dark Souls 1 without the framerate being unlocked and my framerate is actually worse, lol. I think I need it enabled but maybe I just need to disable to fight the four kings if I use a shield that gives me a buff (like the grass crest shield or the sanctus).
