Worth backtracking for the Black Eye Orb?

Got through Sen's with relatively little trouble, and now I'm in Anor Londo. Reading ahead, I see that there will be a spot where if I've got the Black Eye Orb (which I don't) I can fight Lautrec and eventually resurrect the Fire Link Shrine keeper. Going back through Sen's is proving just enough of a pain in the ass to make me question whether it's worth it or not. So, is it?

Yes, its totally worth it. Best way to do it would be clear out Anor Londor until you get to the boss, but dont kill him yet. (You will notice the big fog gate) then go back to get the Black Eye Orb and go again to Anor Londo to get your reward. After that you can proceed to the boss and continue on.

There's a shortcut, you need to open the cages that are close to the iron golem fight, to open them you need to get the key that you get at the tower close to the giant that drops the balls into the fortress (the one that seems unaccesible).

They take you back to the entrance of the fortress.

You can run from the Anor Londo boss fog to Firelink in about 8 minutes, and get back in 30 seconds using a Homeward Bone.

You will be able to warp acroos the world after defeating the main boss of Anor Londo, so you don't have to worry about going back to the Firelink Shrine yet.

I was kind of thinking along those lines. Like, I don't need anything else back there right now, and I'll probably be back in Anor Londo for farming and stuff. As long as I'm not going to miss anything by putting it off, I may as well just plow on through.

Just continue and after O&S warp from Gwynewere bonfire to firelink, take orb and go directly back

Easiest way is to kill Ornstein and Smough to unlock fast travel

Just wait until after getting the Lordvessel. You can still warp to firelink even though the fire keeper is dead.
