DARK SOULS™: Prepare To Die Edition

DARK SOULS™: Prepare To Die Edition

I may of found what fog gates are
I've come to wonder why these gates exist in the lore and what do they do and I may of figured it out,

Time is convoluted in Lordran, and I believe the fog gates are an example of this as they likely separate time from certain areas. When you enter a Boss's fog gate it will stay there until you kill the boss, but if you die time resets and the arena will return to it's original state as if you never passed the fog gate. As such the fog gate waits until you complete whatever you need to complete before allowing time to proceed.

*****SPOILERS*****

This is why:
  • The bosses don't remember you
  • The Asylum Demon is on the roof the first time you encounter him, but on the floor when you pass the fog gate.
  • The Taurus Demon jumps down from the tower each time you enter his arena
  • The Capra Demon revives his dogs each time you encounter him
  • The Bell Gargoyle survive whether or not you killed one of them
  • Ornstein and Smough get revived and lose any extra power each time you encounter them
  • Ornstein is perfectly fine that Smough has betrayed and will betray him if given the chance
  • The second time you encounter Seath, there is no fog gate and Seath flies

Please tell me of any flaws in my theory.

Fog gates are just replacement of loading screens lol. Not everything in Dark Souls has deeper meaning xd.
If they were loading screens then they wouldn't disappear or you wouldn't be able to see the other side, and good game design means giving an explanation for game mechanics.
Ok but as stated above, exceptions are Caeseless Discharge, Priscilla, Bed of Chaos and another bosses from sequels. If your theory is right and this was their intention lorewise, I doubt they would be so inconsistent with it.

And trying to defend this theory by saying, that they made Bed of Chaos this different to make it easier is stupid. If your theory was right and it was their intention, they could just make Bed of Chaos easier in general so it would be possible to kill her in one go without "saving progress".

I dont know whats the purpose of fog gates actually then. Maybe it should just make you think whats on the other side and create tension, same way as Resident Evil games did it with doors.
It's well know that The Bed of Chaos was made during crunch time and the devs couldn't make it how they wanted, so they made what we have now and allowed it so that the damage done is saved as they knew it was hard as it was without saving progress.

This guy too.
"the curtains are blue"

every YouTube scholar: "The curtains represent Seathes immense depression and allude to his great betrayal signifying despair and loneliness"

Dark Souls dev: "hey I like blue, lets make the curtains blue"

But they are loading screens. The Capra Demon is a good example of this. He remains textureless until you pass said fog gate.

They're not loading screens.
Look at second sentence. "Not everything in Dark Souls has deeper meaning".
For me personally, fog gates are another type of doors(You walk in, You don't know what is behind it and You do not know if You can go back).
Once You start connecting fog walls to boss fights there is this "fake" fog wall. You buff, You heal to full, You expect another big fight aaaaaaaaand it is just another room and rest of the level/area(for example Sen's Fortress, lower level).

If You truly are looking for something more, then answer me, why your character never goes truly hollow? Propably most people/players have died many many times with 0 souls and this should lead to your character going mad/hollow. But it never happens.
You know why? Because it is video game.
If not the fog walls You could cheese most bosses with range attacks.
It is better then invisible walls that block your projectiles(like in many other games)

They're there because Demon's Souls exists.
