Gave Large Ember to Blacksmith but cannot upgrade my weapon?

I've given ember 2 times to the blacksmith right before sens fortress, but i cannot upgrade my longsword or my shield past +5. Of course i got the right shards to do that. Do i have to use humanity before that, is there any reason for this?

After +5 you need the large titantite shard and you need ask him to ascend the weapon, not reinforce it.

I gave him the ember from the butterfly and the one from the butcher in the depths. I don't see the option "ascend" there, it is "reinforce" that is available.

The Blacksmith talked to me like he'd give me a "special" weapon or something when i gave him an ember. Does he wait for me to give him something? I need to make another stop there.

Yeah, different context menu for ascending a weapon than the menu for reinforcing weapon. Top option when speaking to blacksmith.
