What does 'Retrieval' do?

Whenever you die, and go back to your last place of death, there's this little flame hovering above where died, and when you click on it, it spawns this message saying 'Retrieval' But what does it actually do?

You regain all the souls and hummanity you had before death.

Only of your previous death, if you die again before retrive, you lose those souls/humanity forever, and the new "retrival" point holds whatever souls/humanity you had before that death.

It tells you at a bonfire on the level up screen. You can't level up until you beat the asylum.
